Sorry to hear about your situation Garth. I too have Diabetes that I manage through diet and exercise so far. Definitely something you have to learn how to live with, but it can be done. The bike will be there when you get back to it though. And its not like you have a short riding season out there on the left coast.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

For me I just stay away from all sugar in general, and definitely stay away from soda (pop, soft drinks...whatever term they use in your area of the world for coke pepsi and the like).
I do not limit myself from ALL sugar, but I do not eat candy or ice cream or chocolate in general. I do eat fruit alot. You do also want to eat on a somewhat regular basis, this is the tough one for me as my work scheudle is a moving target at best. Typicaly on the road somewhere every day and never get lunch at the same time.
This is by no means a medically endorsed diet of any type, just what I do that tends to work for me. But then I am kind of borderline on the diabetic scale of things. Typically I never get readings over 200, and more often right around 100.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Garth that is a bummer - you are on the right track beginning to plan around diet - diet and EXERCISE will combat diabetes best - regular exercise does so much to help regulate your blood sugars and can even possibly prevent you from requiring medication.
Talk to your doctor and just pay attention - avoiding sugar is great, but also watch for foods that turn to sugar easily - breads, potatoes.
Glad you found the abcess before it caused a sepsis!

It's all about carbs. It also makes a difference as to the source of the sugars. As an example, there is a big difference between eating a baked potato and eating mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes are basically pre-digested, and the body instantly absorbs the sugars from them, but has to work at getting the sugars out of a baked potato. Remember too, alcohol is instant sugar. If you drink, it's time to switch to a low-carb version.
Been type 1 since I was 5, and I have been on an insulin pump for the last 20 years. Keep an eye on it, and you might be able to avoid going that route, as type 2 can be pushed over the edge and require insulin. Do your research and learn from the endocrinologist and a dietician.1980 XS850SG - Sold

The abcess is a real pain in the ass pun intended
If you are a type two, the first thing is go to salads and meats, and cut the bread and pasta WAY down. Even a type one, like me, avoids the carbs. Like bug, I'm on a pump, and have been for about 12 years. I make it work, as it's way better than shots.
The big thing is do NOT try to change you diet overnight! You will fail, and then feel bad because of it. Just start off small, reduce the carbs, eat a few more salads and a little more chicken and fish. You can go to the diet soda if you like soda, and beer is about like a single slice of bread, depending on the beer.
As you have seen, I live a "normal" life for an XS, and I don't let the diabetes get in my way of enjoying life.
Number one thing you will learn is test. I have two meters, and will buy a new one if I forget one. The "one touch" can be had for about $20 at any RX, but the strips are about $80 per 100. The old razor blade marketing...
Enjoy, get better, and think about mid September up here for a rally.Ray Matteis

On a side note when I had surgery they put me under with ketamine . Now I can see why the ravers do that stuff . Very potent and doesn't seem to be any noticeable side effects although I think I had a good ride!91 kwaka kz1000p

I've been a type II diabetic and on oral medication for over 5 years now and just recently I was able to reach the milestone of reaching the point of being diet controlled and getting OFF the medication and being able to keep my blood sugars in the normal ranges. I've also lost over 25 lbs in the last 30 days and not only do I have more energy (and my clothes are fitting looser) but I can feel the difference in how the bike handles. Those who are facebook friends with me have probably seen my updates on the diet program that I'm on, it's fantastic and it works. Another friend of mine (a fellow alumnus from my high school several years ahead of me) who is an insulin dependent diabetic is on the same program and while he hasn't lost any appreciable weight, he has been able to decrease his insulin intake significantly.Cy
