  • oh great !

I broke a cam chain tensioner the other day while almost home.bike started make noise.Coasted into the shop checked the tensioner the locking bolt stripped.Yamaha had on back order until end of aug so I did the Vmax mod.Every thing was looking good cams all set up ready to put it back together and test ride!Quick compression check and wallah!! 60lbs in #3 and 0lbs in #4.I'm guessing bent valves.I think I have enough parts to get it fixed I just hope I don't see any holes when I get in there.I'm getting ready to go out and pull the head now I just had to come in and have a cup of coffee and blow off steam for a minute or two. Thanks for listening Terry

Bent exhaust valve in 4,and ever so slightly intake and exhaust in 3.Had the valves but needed to run by Napa and pick up some valve grinding compound. Also 7-11 for some aaah beer.Looks like I lucked out.I should get back on the road tomorrow.

That was a close one. Glad it was no more serious. I was gonna offer a spare head, but it would need a bunch of valves too. I'll let you know next time I'm headed your way.

OK sorry I took so long to report back but I had to watch grand kids on Sunday and work a Mon-Tue and didn't get any thing done.Just like Crazy Steve reported the Vmax is tighter !!.That is makes the cam chain tighter. Also you need to file or use Dremal tool to make the bolt holes closer together.I also had a harder time lining up the cam gears.I couldn't get as much advance on the intake cam as I wanted to appox 3 deg instead of the 5 I wanted but I noticed that it does idle a bit smoother and have a little smoother power band. But I seem to have lost a little bit of top end btwn 9 & 10 k.I'm out of valves now so if I bend any more I'll have to order a stainless steel set from geezer.Terry

You could do worse than putting in a set of Geezer's valves. I'm running a set of his on the intake side of my SG. It really lit up the low end. They are polished. Evidently this improves the flow. I popped a wheelie with mine the first trip across the driveway after the install. I was impressed.

I would advise keeping the tack out of the red. The usable power beyond redline (8.5 k rpm FYI! ) usually drops off. The risk of engine damage increases the more you visit the red area...but Im sure you already know this. Glad to hear its back and running.

The mega cycle cams give harder pull between 6.5 & 10 k But I agree I do run a greater risk of engine damage. If it happens we'll rebuild her again. But these engines are pretty tough I don't race this bike but I run her pretty darn hard at times. This is the first break down I have had and I think I could be blamed for over tightening the locking bolt on the cam chain tensioner and stripping the threads.I guess just one more reason why we love these bikes!!

i am utterly amazed at the casual attitude some of you guys have towards tackling what, for me at least, would be a massive job. and i mean that in the most respectful way. replacing valves, heads, removing transmissions to monkey with the gears, pulling/rebuilding carbs at the drop of a hat you guys are tremendous and fearless mechanics and i salute you! i would sooner do my own dental work than remove my xs1100 engine and take it apart. my previous 1 and 2 cylinder engine rebuilds seem like kids play when compared to this bike. but i sure have learned some valuable tips that so far i've been able to do myself: new a.c.c.t, new fuse block, r.l.u. removal, headlight relay bypass, and new pulse unit wiring. thanks for posting this valuable stuff for the rest of us "newbies". here's hoping this is as complicated as i must get.
