  • Friction modifiers...

Anyone ever added this stuff to either the middle drive or final drives? Ford makes a really good one that quiets down a rear end substantially, so didn't know if anyone's tried it for a noisy/whiney middle drive? I've got a couple bottles of this stuff laying around. Stinks like already burnt gear drive oil.. but works well in cars/trucks.

I've added it to rear ends that already has that in it and it will quiet them down. When doing full fluid replacements on a Ford using full synthetic, they still recommend adding a bottle of this.

That's because Fords ar so damn noisy and touchy you need all the help you can get to keep them from self destructing.

Ride without a fairing. You aren't going to be worrying about what little noise comes from the fd

When I rode to NYC last year I couldn't hear anything but ringing for two days afterwards.

I'd Like to. Just depends on my next job. Tomorrow I am driving down to Houston to try and catch a ship for 3 or 4 months. If it works out that I am available and the bike is together, I will definitely show up on two wheels.

I riding, not trailering Greg....I said trailering would be faster as I don't stop as often, but I need the long trip as practice for next summer.

                    Im leaving from Lufkin.

I will already be at my Brother in Laws place visiting Rising Sun when I leave Thursday. That is 300 miles closer to Little Rock.

If I leave after work thursday about 1400 its about 300 miles to LR.
I might have to see if I can leave at noon.

It's still a couple months away but we need to coordinate our arrival times and a meeting place.

Damn, we have completely hijacked Tods thread.

                      Ahhh who cares.

Back on topic, the friction modifier is for a LSD (limited slip drive) or a (posi) differential. It "modifies" the "friction" of the clutch assembly inside the carrier so it doesn't chatter when cornering. The clutch set in there is just like the on in your bike or in an auto trans, and engages when one wheel starts to spin (slip) faster than the other, temporarily locking both axles together. You will find many motorcycle oil blends contain friction modifiers also intended to reduce clutch chatter.
As niether the mid or final drive have any clutches it won't do anything but dilute the already small amount of gear oil in the drives.
