  • New member & no bike

    Well,
I thought I had a bike today, but it was just too rough.
Did not run, and missing too many parts.

There is another for me to look at tomorrow.
Hopefully that one will be better.
I will be able to drive it. That will be a great help.

If all goes well I can post a new bike.

    Later, JG

            Well, I got it.

I am the owner of a 1980 xs1100 midnight special.
Just drove it home. The fact that it runs good enough to drive home is
            great.

She has 49000 miles, but I think it was maintained fairly well.
Brakes good, seat bad, paint and power coat etc not too bad considering the age of the bike.
            Fork seals recently replaced.
Starts and runs, has a bog coming off of the line, and revs up a little slow.
            Trans seems good.
Clutch OK, but I did not push it.

Now what to do with it.

New bars, I like lower and wider?
New seat cover, or new seat with slightly less step to it?
It had a windshield that is now off of the bike.

The engine looks good except for the head and tappet covers. They used to be black, and the black is coming off.

I will ride it for a bit. It would be nice to keep it as stock as possible.
I do not mind the mods, as long as it can go back to stock easily.

            Anyhow, I have one.

Congrats on the new bike!!! These things can be real beast, once you get the carbs cleaned up as needed and tuned, they will pull out from under you if you don't hang on.

The 80 MNS is a nice model. All of the pretty stuff of the MNS wihtout the one off stuff they added to the 81 MNS. Did the PO keep the turn signals and have them installed when they removed the fairing?

                DGXSER,

... "will pull out from under you if you don't hang on..."

XS 1100 MNS/SG/G: 65 ft/lbs torque at the crank (probably high 50's at the rear wheel), at something like 6000 rpm, and a 605 lb bike?

You need to get out more... Or check them carbs, see if yours has a nitrous feed going into it?

                1234loft,

Ride safely and fwiw, my 80 SG is bone stock. Love it that way. Not enough of these bikes left that are more or less stock.

In theory the CV carbs are supposed to compensate for that Brant. That is the purpose of the slide and diaphragm setup.

Oh boy... The CV carb is a wonder, but alas it will not and magically cannot increase the oxygen content into the amount of air it can flow at any given throttle opening at any given elevation/altitude.

CV carbs allow driveability to remain more functional as elevation changes more so than something like a flat slide carb, but nothing more.

The fact is at 10,000 feet of elevation you have 1/2 of the oxygen that exists in the same volume of air at sea level. CV carbs do nothing to increase the volume of air flow to make up for that kind of loss. Even at 7000 feet of elevation, there is about 33% less oxygen and nothing short of a turbo or supercharger that can force feed the engine will help make that up in a meaningful amount.

CV carbs and higher eleveation equals lower power.

With that said, Motoman has a good point, sea level would wake my 80 SG the heck up and let it fly with the carbs tuned for that elevation! I might stand corrected at that point in terms of the "... will pull right out from under you..."

Ok DGXSER, I retract my statement, you probably get out plenty...

If you want collector plates in Cheese land the bike has to remain stock from what I understand, about a 100 bucks. I'm still waiting for my title from Minnesota those morons take 6 to 8 weeks to process simple paper work.
But I plan on getting the colletor plate if possible. Just a thought. Good luck with the bike. I've been enjoying mine a lot, been one of the best parts of summer so far. Also check out the rally post, sounds fun.

Gotten off topic a bit, but your both correct in your statements. Gregs statement has to do with vacuum(or lack of at higher altitudes), and Howards has to do with oxygen content(or lack of at altitude). Unfortunately, both result in a substantual power loss. BTW Howard, gonna be paying you a visit, PM me a # I can reach you.
