  • Watch out!

Watch out from behind my fellow riders. The threat isn't always from cars. I was hit (T boned) by my friend on another motorcycle. Bike skid 60' from almost a stopped position.

Damage: Exhaust trashed, FD damaged beyond repair, all signal lights trashed, engine cases trashed, crash bars ground severely, foot pegs sheared off, and seat pan crushed a bit. My leg got a small bit of road rash and my riding jacket was torn a bit on my left arm.

So my word of advice, don't ride staggered, or at all, with anyone unless you are sure they know what they are doing.

Sorry to hear about your mishap. Been there done that and all. In a similar situation where another bike rode up my arse and the resulting crash was pretty bad. Ambulance was called 3 times and then cancelled as I kept regaining conscioiusness. Dumb asses should have got it coming and kept it coming. Just might have to do with my present state of mind, crazy as a ****house rat...lol.

          Sorry to hear that

At the North rally last weekend I had some excitement on my SF. I'd been running Dunlop 404's on it and had to brake hard a couple times. The 404's were just not up to it and once I went into a hard left hand corner and the rear broke loose twice and almost high sided me. The rest of the rally I road drag and stayed well back so I wouldn't act like a bowling ball and take out several riders if it happened again. I've since switched them out and now have battle axes on it, same as the LH.

I won't be able to get photos for a few days. What really bothers me is that the bike was pretty much bone stock and looked good. There wasn't a spec of rust on the exhaust pipe. This year's goal was to get her real polished up because she was running well. Man oh man where to start now

Well, you are alive and typing, so that's a GREAT start!
As for the bike, start in on a list and post it so we can see what's needed. I think we all have a few spares, and between them it should be possible to put it back together again. I had to do that last year for Special Ed after an Idiot in a Prius, talking on a cell phone, made an illegal turn INTO him!
As Kat said, glad you are OK, and that is the important thing.

                From behind

I was hit from behind, back in 2009, by a M/C so hard I just knew it was a car. Knocked out and lightly broke my neck and a very expensive helicopter ride to the hospital. My neck actually felt better than the decades of carrying a video camera skydiving. I was doing 45 - 50 mph at the time, so I'm not sure how fast he was going. The whole deal was an expensive pain in the A__.

                      Storytime!

                      Hey there HobbyMan,

Sorry to see your return to the site as a CRASH REPORT!

Yep, BTDT also! (became/contributed to the Motorcycle Statistics) Just a few weeks after I had gotten my new for high school graduation TX500A broken in, was out with my best friend for an afternoon/evening summer ride...also out in B.F. west Texas many miles from the city. We were riding staggered me in front, was already dark returning back to town when we saw car headlights approaching from the rear. We both moved over to the right edge of the road but NOT on the hard shoulder, to allow the car plenty of room to pass. Next thing we see are the headlights shift from our left side to our right side...he was passing us on the hard shoulder! My friend made a hard countersteering maneuver to the left as the car hood came up under his right handlebar. I also swirved left and avoided the car as they drove past!

I was pissed.... so I took off after them.... 1st mistake!
My friend was riding an older Honda 175 so he couldn't keep up, I was able to get it up to 85+ to catch up to them, hit the brights, could see the mulleted REDNECKS, what brand of beer they were drinking, etc., saw them shielding their eyes from the mirrors...so after a few moments, I figured they had gotten the message and I started to back-slow down. Then they started slowing down. We both stopped! Then they started to turn around! I got turned halfway in the road essentially sitting on the yellow divider line when I thought/remembered my friend coming up behind me!

We had just crested a small hill, he had seen the tail and brake lights...totally dark boondocks road! Next thing he sees is my headlight way over to the LEFT, my tail light to the RIGHT and I'm somewhere in the middle...right where he's heading. He hits the/locks his rear brakes..he was used to doing flat track type racing. He's got it angled and moving LEFT...thinking he's going to clear me.

I look up...and in my Inexperience my hand comes off the clutch as I was still in the trying to get out of there mode..and my bike lurches forward another foot or two! He doesn't get by me...plows into my front wheel around 40-50 mph, I had a nice back rest, was standing on my left foot, handlebars cross up and my fairing cuts the back of my right hand as my hands come off the bars, my bike then goes into a spin, the back rest catches me just right and FLIPS me up and off of my bike. My friend jumps off of his just before impact, his leg hits my left leg as he passes/flies by me, the 2 bikes spin and grind down the road as he's flying above them but they are slower, he passes them, lands on his back, both of us NO GEAR...he arches up on his boots and helmet and does a 3 point slide down the road until he hits the shoulder/grass!

After I stop spinning, I get up and start running towards him yelling if he was okay, he was yelling back if I was okay. We turn and look at the car as it turns OFF it's lights and drives off back to town leaving us there...we didn't get a license plate! But we both survived with just minor bruises and road rash. $1200 worth of damage to my 1 month old $1400 bike..circa 1976 dollars....Insurance fixes mine instead of totalling it! Friend has no insurance, my ins. co. actually tries to SUE him for $$! But we're still friends to this day. We were best men at each other's wedding, etc.!

Heal fast, get the bike fixed and get back out there!

Sorry to hear of it Hobby man, Glad you are OK, Sure can surprise you from behind. Good advice you give, though I do try to stay to one side out from in front of such a rider. Much easier to watch out for someone if they are ahead of you. Good luck bringing bike back. I know you are up to it.

Sory to hear of the crash, Andrew. I know that bike looked really nice. Probably can't tell from this distance, but this was his bike with my XJ on a weeklong camping trip we took.

1979. 2week old Laverda 1000 Jota. Rear ended by a VW bus at a stop light. Bounced of the two cars in front of me, messing those up to. I had just a hair over 500 miles on it. I came out ok, bike ended up totaled. Dude has decent insurance and the whole thing was witnessed by 2 motorcycle cops sitting on the corner.
