  • Where does your XS hail from?

Those of you original owners know where your XS/XJ(s) came from,
but I was looking over my project SG yesterday and noticed a faded sticker on top of the tail light.
    It said Stone Mountain Yamaha.
So my SG hails from GA.
I bought it from the PO in Petersburg, VA.
Then again, it could have been sold as 'used' from there, so that might not be its original home.

I think my G came from SW Fla. At least that's where my (ex)father-in-law got it about a decade ago.

Too bad there wasn't a way we could hack into yamaha's old database of shipping info to see where the serial numbers(VINs) got shipped to.

Don't know for sure but as I traced back 6 or 7 owners to the last guy that actually had it actually titled the bike they were all around the Minneapolis MN area and that went back about 15ish years.

        This is interesting . . .

There's a sticker on my SG indicating that it was bought new at a place called Alpin Haus in Amsterdam, NY. So I googled that place just now, and it appears to be an outdoor/skiing retailer, but they sell RV's, too.

Maybe they sold bikes back in the day. Yamaha made snowmobiles, so maybe they tried some cross-seasonal cross-selling.

The interesting thing is that members Cuda and Marshy live in that area. Maybe they have a clue.

It might be fun to ride up there (4-5 hours from me), and show them what they (may have) used to sell.

I think I'm the third owner but technically only the second. The guy I bought it from bought it from the original owner and fixed it up to sell. But he never titled it. So the records at the DMV indicate that I bought it from the guy who bought it new at Alpin Haus.
Hill? What hill? I didn't see any hill! Why wasn't there a sign? And where are my keys?

My title shows first year of registration as 1980, as has the correct plates for that year (Ca changed plate color very shortly after that), as was apparently never out of the computer and has spent it's life as a Ca bike. Don't know what part of Ca, but given the lack of rust, it appears to have stayed away from the snow belt and from the coastline.

                Across the street

My xs850 was sold by Country Cycle Shop. It was across the street from my house that I grew up in and ended up buying. It may have been one that I sat on and dreamed when I was small. Funny thing they are an outdoor and ski shop now too. They went belly up just like Bob Jones' shop when the US government saved Harley by putting big taxes on Jap bikes over 750ccs. Funny thing they didn't care about us or the countless american shop owners.
My xs11 came from a field in Lancaster.

I got mine at Cycle Craft Yamaha in Tacoma Washington (back in the day when the dealers only sold one line..); in fact, it's 'birthday' is coming up on the 26th this month... 34 years old!

Long since out of business, but don't blame Harley; seems the owner was putting the sales tax money up his nose instead of sending it to the state...

                        Hey Mstic and Greg,

The parts may have been made in Japan, but they were actually assembled either in the USA or country/territory near the USA. Back in the day they didn't make bikes larger than 500cc's in Japan. Mine came from the Navy Exchange in JAPAN, but it was actually shipped from the USA TO Japan for the NEX, and then was shipped back to the States in my household goods allowance as an E-5.

Only identifying mark on mine was a 1980 Oklahoma registration sticker of some kind on the frame. Still wonder how it got to Michigan.
