    Hey folks, I just bought a 1979 Yamaha XS100 in pretty ratty shape. It's missing front headlights and turn signals, and the rectifier is bad (as far as I can tell). I've ridden it a few times before the battery quit, and it's FAST. It's my first bike, and the only one I've ever ridden. Cant wait to see you all on the road

      Welcome! Im new to the forums as of last week with a 78, also my first bike. I hope you find as much useful information as I already have.

        Nate & Tony,
        For both of you new guys, I can't stress enough about the motorcycle safety course.
        These bikes are big, heavy and have a 30 year old designed braking system.
        They are not your new lightweight sport bike. They can be a bit fickle to stop when you want them to. SO, be super alert to all those crazy cell phone talking car drivers out there.
        They do have a lot of power and are lots of fun to ride.
        As a plus, they are a bit bigger and thus maybe the car drivers might see you a little better than if you were on a smaller sport bike.

        Okay, I'll stop ranting. I just want you guys to be safe and enjoy your bikes for MANY years to come.

          the bike is fast all right; at least 20mph faster than it's brakes and handling.
          Use the search function to find answers to specific questions, the parts for sale forum to find parts and the repair forum to see how to fix things.
          And fer chrissake take a rider's course, nobody wants to see you on the road just laying there waiting for the EMT guys or worse, being a smear of forensic evidence.

            +1 on what George says about safety course,they called these bikes"super bikes" for a reason back in the day.Lot's of power. Welcome to the crazy house.

              Welcome aboard, I also started with my XS11 (81 special picked up for a song)
              Can honestly say it is still running because I found this site, lots of good info here!
              I agree about the safety course, and have fun with it.

                Wellcom. lad!

                Yes, yes, to all the above. A Honda Rebel is a beginners bike, not an xs11. I started with a Harley "Super Ten" when I was 14. I took a "Motorcycle training course" many years later in order to be a certified trainer; alas, the company folded before I got my certification, but I was impressed at how much I learned about motorcycle safety after I had been riding for so many years. I can't recommend it enough. Welcome, and good luck! Or should I say: keep your rubber side down!

                Old bikers never die, they're just out of sight!

                My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"
                I've been riding since 1959.
