My last one was free. Advance Auto had a sale. Four quarts of Valvoline motorcycle oil for a sale price plus a free Fram filter. I don't like Fram, but it's always good to have a spare filter sitting on the shelf.

Ebays rules say don't go outside of their site when purchasing items listed on their site. everytime i check out through ebay it auto-directs me to paypal. probably could show ebay his ad stating to go around their site... pretty sure it's a violation of their terms of use.

                  +

+1 on the Wix filter. its $5 here at NAPA and comes with both o'rings. ive heard of issues here with getting the Fram seal to stay on thru the bolt even tho i have used them without any issues.
the ebay seller has a 100% feedback score and $6+$6 is a fair deal. i think u may be ready for some glasses
personally ive bought plenty from ebay sellers and never had any issues, but i also make sure i know that the product fit is correct and what the total cost will be. not too hard if u can read. just givin ya a little s...t with good intentions

A word on refunds for items that aren't what you expected

I've sold old tractor parts on ebay for years. Selling anything old on ebay is a challenge of meeting the buyers expectation with what they are getting. Some like me choose to point out defects, others tend to hide them then hide behind "well it's XX years old what did you expect?" It's the same game with old Motorcycle parts.

I bought a set of XJ mufflers on eBay and I didn't believe they were as advertised. The sellers are really only obligated to take something back if there is an issue with the description/listing. In most cases on eBay you return something at your expense and you are refunded your original price and original shipping but in the end you eat shipping one way. On my mufflers I returned them as directed and the seller refused to issue any refund until I agreed to forfeit the original shipping. no dice. It was worked out through ebay buyer protection (sBay ruled against the seller and refunded the money) and in the end i got my refund 2+ weeks after stating the problem and ate the return shipping

I bought some mufflers new on Amazon, opened the box and they clearly weren't the same size as the dimensions listed on the site. Worked with the seller who refused to prepay the freight back. These were clearly different than listed and the seller stated the thre product dimensions listed are shipping dimensions not product dimensions. I'm an IT guy by day and can't imagine how difficult or who's responsibility it is to update the web pages when an item is listed but multiple sellers sell it, but that's not my problem as a consumer.

I filed a complaint with Amazon who disagreed with the sellers claim and within 48 hours refunded my original price and shipping out without the mufflers even being returned. Later I received a prepaid label from the seller who stated that they were there to take care of their customers. I must say that I was impressed which seems to happen less often these days. I will say that I was pleased at JC Whitney store the other day, much more so than when I've ordered online and had to wait a week and a half for them to ship something in stock.

I'll still have to buy some stuff on ebay to keep my tractors and motorcycles running but for new purchases I will migrate towards Amazon over eBay. I've been searching for a new Bell Mag 9 Helmet to replace my aging Mag 8 and will probably buy it on Amazon instead of eBay. I've already been to ALL the bike shops in my Area and no one carry's Bell anymore. I can't get the other brands over my pumpkin head even with their 2x Helmets. I've looked at that Helmet on line at over a dozen retailers and it's always $169.99, seems like Bell has a lot of influence over their retailers. When it comes down to price and they are all the same who has the best return policy?

The key to selling old stuff successfully on eBay is to write a description highlighting all of the good points while listing the flaws. The flaws are listed, but the description is written from the point of view of what's good. Does that make sense?

The filter seller made it obvious that he offered "free local pickup". He also made it clear the shipping is $6.

As previously mentioned, it was not clear that the auction was local pickup. It might have been more obvious if I was using a PC but I was using my phone and it displays the auction information differently... dosent really matter now, I still saved a $1/filter over local retail so Im ok with it...

As far as filter quality goes, I cannot see any difference in construction from Fram vs Wix...

The Wix has more pleats per inch which means it flows better having better flow characteristics.

As for the shipping thing, I suspect that he's doing it the way he is to hide the shipping costs from ebay as they charge their fee on the shipping cost if you pay through them, and they started doing that because some vendors were selling stuff for $.99 and then charging $45 for shipping to get around having to pay ebay fees. I suspect that if you sent this info to ebay this guy might find himself in hot water with ebay, as I can't see any other reason for him to not go through ebay entirely for the payment process if he wasn't trying to hide something from them.
