  • So, What has fallen off your bike?

Today, I lost my left mirror glass. It just came flying outta the cup on the interstate. (I don't think it broke until the guy behind me ran over it, so no 7 years bad luck for me, maybe him though)
About a month ago, I had lost the right one.
Last year, my right muffler came off, Luckily, I found it the next day.
The year before that, the shift lever. That was on a side street and I quickly got that back on.
The year before that, my left saddle bag lid. Found that too, the next day.
Lost my lunch box once too, but that doesn't count for this thread.

I know there are a lot of you that had something come flying off these 30+ year old machines, so lets hear your stories.

Closest thing for me was once my baffle came out of one pipe while I was starting the bike in a parking lot. Gave it a good hard kick and it stayed in till I got home.

Nothing has ever fell off or out while driving though. Or at least nothing important that I realized was missing...

      Exhaust pipe

Last Oct I was riding to the Arkansas Rally and just shy of Texarkana I noticed a significant change in the sound so pulled over..

#3 header pipe was gone and I was looking at valves.

Valve cover seepage had worked its magic like PB Blaster on the retaining ring nuts and they worked themselves loose and off.

So I was on side of the road almost 500 miles from my destination...turned across grassy median and rode back about a mile very slow and started looking....found pipe right away in the road...90 min later in ditches I found ring. Nuts nowhere to be seen....

Robbed some regular nuts off crash bars and worked them on finger tight to make it 10 miles to Texarkana. Hit a local cycle shop, no dice, they directed me to a bolt place, no dice, they directed me to a Yamaha Dealer where Lo and Behold! Two brand new hex nuts. They were as surprised as I was. 10min later I was on the road.

Ive lost a side cover that I found, but never this.

I had the lunch box come off once. When I had saddle bags, I lost the lid a few times and was sick of having to use bungees to keep them on. Other than that, I did have my 4-1 Jardine fall off after I removed the baffel. I didnt knee w the down tubes were only a slip fit into the collector...

I couldn't even go 24 hrs before I lost something else.

On my way home from work, I lost my right rear footpeg.
It was holding the left saddlebag lower mount.
I went to open it up to get my lunchbox and noticed it was loose.
I looked down and the foot peg was GONE!.

Lucky me, I've got an SG sitting right here just waiting for resotration, but at every turn, I end up robbing parts off it.

I lost the right side cover. On other bikes I had mufflers, fall off, mirrors loosen, but fortunately, I have only fallen off the motocross bike!

On a particularily harsh railroad crossing I lost my backrest right out of the luggage rack. Tighteners must have been loose but it had to come forward better part of 6 inches to come out. Suprised me for sure. Other than that regular examination of various parts and pieces has kept the rest with me on my rides. Knock on wood.

I've lost my Vetter trunk twice. Both times when the Vetter luggage rack failed (the bolts broke, after the second time I gave up on it and got an OEM rack from Crazy Steve).

Both times it stayed connected enough that it kinda drug behind the bike, and I was able to bungee it behind the bike the second time (the first time I was over an hour from home but had someone who could carry it home in their cage for me). Now it's far more secure, with more bracing than even the OEM rack has.

Just me. Three times now, and my oldest son once while he was riding the '81. That's enough and I've slowed down a bit now. Trying to leave the crashing to the dirtbikes.
