I was out in Stillwater with XJOK2PLAY a couple months ago riding and we came across a couple younger guys on sportbikes at a gas station. Bob got to talking to them and they were bragging about getting up over 215mph.
Both of them had their helmets on, but in jeans, t shirt, and tennies.Greg

Just west of there last summer a guy on a sport bike hit a spot on I-51 where the concrete on the highway had buckled from the heat and flew over 200 feet before finding his crash site.
I don't think he was doing 70.Greg

on the 91
I was treveling on the 91 freeway here one day, doing my usual 80 - 85 mph when this guy in shorts goes by me at least 150 mph and pulls a wheelie as he pulled into the lane in front of me and just drove off in the distance on that wheelie. And I thought I was bulletproof. You can't stay young forever, but you can be immature for the rest of your life...

At 215mph (which I doubt) no helmut in the world will help! When I was a cop many years ago, we called a motorcycle accident with injuries, Stick and Spoon time.

Definition of a SQUID
1. Squid
A young motorcyclist who overestimates his abilities, boasts of his riding skills when in reality he has none. Squid bikes are usually decorated with chrome and various anodized bits. Rear tires are too wide for their own good, swingarm extended. Really slow in the corners, and sudden bursts of acceleration when a straight appears. Squids wear no protection, deeming themselves invincible. This fact compounds intself with the fact that they engage in 'extreem riding'--performing wheelies and stoppies in public areas. Squids wreck alot. Derived from 'squirly kid'

We were suddenly passed by a chromed out R1 and then when we rounded the bend, we saw the squid wrapped around a tree, he'd probably be alive if he was wearing a helmet.
2. squid
An extremely rare animal with a short lifespan. Usually a new sport bike enthusiast with the reasoning of a lunatic, whom you might see thrashing on an R1 wearing sandals, shorts, and a tee.
When found lying motionless on the pavement, this creature transforms itself into a stream of blood, exposed flesh, and broken limbs. Hence the squid moniker.

Underdressed
Imminently
Dead
Did you see that guy leave the showroom on the R6? Did you see what he was wearing? What a moron. That Squid.Don

A freind of mine at work told me yesterday that his brother was going down the road and was a trooper along side the road radaring I guess, so he looked down to see how fast he was going and when he looked back up, he ran right over a guy turning off on a motorcycle at 55 mph. Didnt even see him. I got mad as soon as i heard it, it was right in front of the cyclist house and his kids were in the yard and wife on porch and they all saw it happen. His brother got out and ran to the guy and the guy was trying to get up to kick his a$$ but couldnt. The rider was flew to charleston and was found to only have a broken foot and other very minor injuries. I always worry about that when i have to stop to turn. I am contantly looking into my mirrors behind me so i can take off if i see someone not going to stop.Jeff

I have four friends that took a course and are now looking at their first bikes, so I've been trying to coach them on their first purchases for learners.
Sadly, when you look at paper (which so often does not reflect reality), a new sport bike is potentitally the safest bike to ride with excellent contact patch, stability, braking, ABS, some now with traction control and low weight. Too bad whenever someone hops on one they haven't developed the respect for power or life that those of us smart enough to start small do.
It's wild to think that a modern 650cc V-twin would leave most of our XS's in the dust in every performance category. Looking at all the paper statistics in the world is no replacement for having and utilizing a fully functional brain with the optional 'survival instinct' package.
I just hope they don'tgo out and buy the biggest, baddest bike out there and end up a smear on I-90 for acting a fool. These new bikes are both safer and scarier. I'll stick with my XS so long as it holds up and this good community is around. No need to tempt fate more than done by just riding at all.1990 Ninja ZX-10. It's the Silver Surfer. HI-YA!!
