What about "comfort factor"? Anybody go from a Walmart/k mart 100 buck helmet to one above 200 bux or so? With only 3 living brain cells, I dont
want to bake any of them into non functioning.. They dont really get along
with each other now.. If one were to pack his bags and leave... Well it wont be pretty..

I heard THAT, so you can imagine what people
who ride with NO helmet VALUE what's inside their skull???

BTW, I suffered a head concussion when I was just 13 while on
the back of my brother's 150 Dream in 1965 (we slipped on some oil while manuvering a clover-leaf exit off the Freeway in Fort Worth), so from that point on I would NEVER rode a bike unless I had a helmet on...It's always on "just in case" it's needed...

[B]Believe me, IF you've never had a head concussion, you don't want any part of one (NO JOKE)[/

I don't like wearing a helmet in city traffic because I can't see or hear what's going on around me. I crashed my CX500 twice in Ft Worth, both times wearing a helmet because at that time there was a helmet law in Texas and both times because of something I couldn't either see or hear due to the helmet.

I wear a helmet when I'm on the highway or when riding in the twisties.

If you check around at the motorcycle stores online you can usually get a pretty good quality DOT helmet for $60-$80.

That road looks pretty straight to me. I was talking about the REAL twisties like we did in Arkansas JW. I mean the ones ON the road not off the road.

You'll notice I do have the helmet there on the back bar just in case. Never did feel the need though.

Looks like I'm really worried about those 2 huh?

No intellegent person was going to be dragging knees when the first thing you see leaving town is Richard getting pulled over for speeding.

I wear a helmet every time I get on the bike, and it held out when I got hit in the parking lot of McDonalds on Jan 9th. The helmet didn't keep me from seeing anything, I saw the idiot getting ready to back up and tried to evade but was unable to. He hit me hard enough to crack the back of the helmet, and then my helmet hit the ground face first. If I had not been wearing a helmet I would likely been dead (while they DO have a helmet law here, I wear a helmet anyways), and one of those skullcap ones wouldn't have protected my face from the parking lot when I hit face first (unconscious as the case was). Even with the helmet I'm still dealing with issues from the damage to my brain from the impact to my head, and from what I've read, I'll be dealing with it for up to a year or more to come, and I've not been able to work since then either (as a programmer my cognitive functions have been adversely affected (and no comments from the peanut gallery Greg) keeping me from being able to do what I do for a living).

So yes, I will wear the most appropriate by my understanding of my protection needs helmet that I can afford, which with my aging head does NOT mean a harder SNELL helmet.

Having recently lived through what some said I was extremely lucky to have lived through, I can tell you without the full face helmet, I would either be dead, more of a brainless fool than I already am, or at the very least much uglier. Helmet had a crushed area, and a gouge through the face shield, and I was definitely not conciouse for the 40 foot flight or roll though tree infested brushland.

I have scar across my shoulder where I got the titanium plate that holds my colar bone together, and my right ankle and lower shin looks like he!! from all the skin that got killed from the wreck, only scar from the surgery is on my knee, that is where they put the Titanium rod through my Tibia. Still there, and my ankle swells almost every day I walk much at all. Seems those screws holding the rod in place make that happen.

So, although I admitedly will go a very short hop like from the restaurant to the hotel at XSEast, maybe an 1/8 mile. I do not care what heat is out, or how straight the road, my brain is all I got going for me (yeah, I ain't got much, but it is all I got).

Yep, some talk it, some walk it. I ALWAYS wear helmet, jacket, boots and gloves and good stout jeans, and as of this month for anything other than short local rides, armored riding pants and I switched from good fitting street boots to dedicated riding boots finally. What jacket I wear depends on the temps, ranging from leather to textile to mesh as the temps increase, although the new textile jacket I got when I got the pants is supposed to be wearable up to around 105 or so, I may switch to shorts under the riding pants by that point .

We have drifted away from the thread a little. I want to ask JW 3 if he knew where the lady lived and could go there and gently try to talk some sense into her head. If she is trying to not be labeled a Babe, and wants to equal a man's abilities on a motorcycle, she is going about it all wrong. Buying a large heavy motorcycle has already given her a label as a no brain beginner. I wouldn't put it to her quite that way, but something has to be done about her, as she will have a death in the family in the future, hers! I have talked to at least 2 or 3 new riders that were way out over their heads in their choice of bikes. One was stubborn, and he got banged up real bad. Fortunately it scared him completely out of riding all to gether. The others listened and are still riding.
As far as helmuts go, I wish there was a way to retrieve that article that Crazy Steve talked about and make it a sticky.
