Special Ed's Epic Adventure!

Okay, this is a thread to give Special Ed a hand along on his cross country road trip on his xs11. He told me he's going from California to Manhattan Island, New York to meet his 1st grandchild for the first time. This impresses the hell out of me, as I try to imagine what if my own grandfather had done that for me. Well ,I would believe that I was very special. Wouldn't you?


So far it sounds like Ed plans to make many stops there and back, taking a varied route. He'll hopefully post up his itinerary as it develops. What I propose here is that any of us that feels motivated to do so, post up whatever it is you like to offer in the way of assistance. Bed, couch, shower, garage, tools, parts, local tour, etc. Add your location, Ed can check this on the fly for contacts.

Ed was in NYC for the birth of his first grandchild! He just NEEDS to ride out to see him again! I'm not sure what he will choose for a route, but first is the final repair on his bike. Both he and I have been too busy to do much on it, so it STILL is NOT running....

Hey, Ray, thanks for the clarification.

In talking a bit with Ed at the Dream Machines event, I was struck by the sense of his commitment to undertake a ride of this size. It does take a lot of preparation to get it all together, the rider, the bike, the funds, the guts to go.

I have faith you will get the bike together. He was saying September, October would be his preferred window of departure. Plenty of time to get that bike squared away. I'm sending positive energy your way! You're a good man, Ray. In my eyes you're the wind beneath his wings.

When we offer up a pit stop or escort along the way, it may help Ed with route planning, maintenance stops, tours, etc.

I'm still considering doing that ride with Ed if he wants. I have family on the East coast in PA, NY & Baltimore. I wonder how long he plans on being gone.

If you come through Colorado on I-70 I should be able to offer a bed / food / garage / support or whatever you might need. I do have 3 dogs and 7 cats in the house, so you would have to put up with some pet hair....

Yep, I got to meet Mica within seconds of his birth. Flying out would be cheaper and faster, but he makes a grand excuse for a cross country motorcycle road trip. His other grand parents live in Minnesota: they are great people, and certainly worth a stop. That's why I plan on a Northerly trip out, and a more Southern route coming back; like maybe a stop in Oklahoma to see Cody, Colorado to see Jerry and anyone else who post here that we can work in.
I am a history buff and have read a lot on American Indian history and culture. One possibility would be to follow, as closely as pavement allows, the Trail of Tears from the Carolinas to Oklahoma and drop in on my Choctaw cousins.
It was a pleasant surprise to meet you Scoot; sorry we dropped the ball on meeting you before the event so that we could ride in together.

Visit

I will be visiting my latest of many great, great grandchildren who is due around June first in PA, a long lost friend in IL, and also would like to visit "the whiz", (Steve Deiter) in N. Carolina, another friend in Grand Junction, CO and any other XSsives along the way.

Great great grandchildren!!! As in more than one? Holy cow! I guess maybe you got an early start, but I certainly got a late start. I like the idea of having a buddy to ride with. The more options for overnight stops the better.
Ray tells me you are looking for XSives interested in highway bars that you want to manufacture. I am very interested. I like the style better than the "case protectors," in spite of a rather unpleasant experience wherein I was side swiped by a car that slammed on it's brakes, after hooking it's front bumper on my bars. Skoot and I went down. We both survived. My asphalt rash healed, but the broken fins on Scoots cylinder heads did not. This is the first time in my ownership that Scoot has been written off as "totaled" by an insurance company. The second time was last year, when I was viciously attacked by a Prius, whose driver was distracted by talking on a cell phone. Anyway I am riding an XS11 that has been "totaled" twice!

I live a one hour ride from Murphy, NC. That used to be Ft Butler. That's where those poor folks were staged for their terrible journey. Perhaps you'll come through when I'm home.

Just realized

There are one too many greats in my post about grandchildren. I don't know what I was thinking. There are 4 great grandchildren so far and one more on the way. I was wondering why Ed said I must have started early. Must have had a brain fart....
