  • I have the feeling im getting screwed

So I bought a used pool pump from this guy and he installed it and told me he would warranty it for a year . I paid 300 in cash. The pump doesn't work and he is not responding to my calls or text .

    I agree

    Lesson learned:

    1. use plastic - you can always reverse the charge and let HIM fight with MC/Visa to get his money

    2. dont buy used equipment on something its impossible to know how much its been used - pool pumps run all the time and hard to tell how used it is - new water pumps always worth money - I feel same on cars - never install anything but a new water pump.

    3. pools are expensive - its one reason I dont have one anymore - I am cheap

Sorry you are having a tough run Garth - its karma for cornering the market on Rabid Transit fairings

If it makes you feel any better, Vasoline is much cheaper than $300.

                that sucks

Hey Garth, I have a 1.5 hp pool pump mounted on a chunk of plywood that you can borrow, if you'd like. You need to keep circulating your pool water so the chemicals can keep the algae at bay. This one has a three foot cord with a plug, runs on 110v. Hell, you can even buy it off me for $300, and I'll guarantee it for a year!

Hey Garthmaster,,,,what is wrong with the pump? I ALSO have a pool and the pumps can act up, Is there no water flowing, does the motor spin, is there current going to the pump??? What is it doing? Give us some detail and maybe it is something simple...................or give me a call........Mike, North of you

Not failiar with pool pumps, but alot of motors in that size have thermal overloads built into them. They will get hot if trying to do to much and the thermals will kick it off, once it cools down, it will kick back on.

If that is what is happening, then first check you do not have anything plugged up in your lines causing the pump to not be able to move the water through. Any valves you forgot to open?

Do you have a bleeder valve near the pump? I've had pool pumps load up like that and die from the sudden introduction of load (water) to an air filled pipe, even on 4" pumps driven by 15HP. Try to bleed air out of the line as best you can, especially if you can force a garden hose into the line, force water through the strainer or overfill the pool to provide a self-priming condition.

Is this a self-priming system? Air lock or incorrectly bled lines can do funny things.

If you know the line is as bled as it can be try holding the 'on' switch down for 30sec-1min and see if it 'catches.' Or manually apply power somehow to make this happen. I have a touchy facility (Lowrey C Mounger) that airlocks super easy and no amount of bleeding will make that motor go until it's forced to run for up to 2 min. and bleed itself.

The only pumps I work with that are as small as I'm assuming yours is are vacuum systems or hot tubs, so I'm admittedly more used to dealing with much heavier duty commercial equipment that may handle a beating with more grace. Any specific info on pump/motor brand and your system would help. I'm also assuming this is a high-rate sand system or cartridge system as well, which can cause airlock more easily than a vacuum-grid system. Either way there needs to be a bleed valve on the pressure side.

Pools can be real fussy and each and every one is different no matter how exactly similar they may be.
