Long spindly thingys?

Those only come on the 'Top of the Line' fully automatic types. You know the ones with the speed range from 16-78 RPMs. Mine is just one of those that has the adjustable counter weight on the tone arm, the lever to raise and lower the tone arm, and everything is done by hand. It used to be auto return, but my son had messed with it when it was fairly new, and it hasn't orked properly since. I've had it since 84 and the motor is getting weak. Hardly enough torque to overcome the a light, dry application of the Discwasher. Had to replace the drive belt a few years ago, and hard a hard time finding one, and was really suprised to find a new stylus cartridge at Best Buy last year.

Older but wiser?

I used to be a long spindly thing now im a short fat thing must come with old age I have an old consul model in the basement from the 70s with am/fm 8 track,andlp player had to go look but it has the spindle on it, should dig it out and see if it still works lol. Friggin basement hope i never move gonna need 4 trucks or a big yard sale .....MITCH

Basement?

What is this Basement thing of which you speak? Is it some sort of gubmint conspiricy? We have no basement here in Texas, there fore they must not exist. Unless you mean that three foot crawl space (snake den ) under the house. If it's not in Texas , then it's not real...at least that's what Bubba would have you think...to them, anything outside the state line is a foriegn country. I couldn't imagine another area of my house looking like my garage

Basement

What it is John is the weather!!! It is so cold in Canada we gots to dig down in the ground to try and stay warm in the winter, also gives you sumtin to bolt the house to so it dont blow away!But mainely it is a place to pile crap that you will never use again but hate to throw out .....MITCH

Here in the mts. of western NC,we don`t have one,crawl space for cats,no mice,snakes because the cats kill them.Couldn`t dig a basement because house is built on solid rock but we have a woodshed with a lot of things piled up I know will need but will proably never find when I need it Hope I find my xs this spring

It seems we have something in common once again. I'm younger than some in this thread, but it seems I fit in pretty well. Power amp=vacuum tube. Preamplifier=vacuum tube. (2 chassis, stainless steel, 60 Lbs.) CD player=VACUUM TUBE. Haven't done vinyl in a while. Best system I ever heard was vinyl based. The 'table had an air bearing for axial and radial loads, with a compressor in the basement. A $25,000 turntable. If you're in to it, try to listen to a SACD player on a good setup (no $200 dvd/sacd combos). Pop in Boston's first album. Wow. CD's don't have to sound like garbage anymore, but everything is a compromise. If you want to see some nutty stuff, check out Audio Note (in Japan) on-line. The Ongaku amplifier is around 20 watts per channel, and costs $85,000.

Memory lane!!! In Northern Minnesota, where I grew up we used to swim out to an island where one of our neighbors had built a cabin to listen to the hand crank gramaphone, The song, "the scandinavian hotshot from Duluth. Only had one song on the cylinder. We would crank that old baby up and listen until it ran out of spring. The key to listening to the whole song was to get it just before it wound down and crank smooth. That way there weren't any needle jumps or skips. Course in the 60s my parents bought a car from one of our local rich folks, Jeno Palucci. He had a modern record player in the car under the dash. We listened to the one record, Davy Crockett and it would skip on one place and repeat here he comes, here he comes, here he comes, kind of reminds me of some of the earlier portable CD players. Went to work for KDAL TV in the late 60s and learned how to edit with a razor on a 2 inch video tape machine. Life was so simple then, cut and paste, cut and paste.

That's my walk down memory lane. Now I produce films and create DVDs for a living. Do you think maybe the old gramaphone had anything to do with it.
