  • New Rubber, how good it is!

Well, this is about as off topic as you can get, but I had to toot my own horn!

I have an old Teac X-1000R "dbx" Reel to Reel deck I got while I was stationed in Japan back in the early 80's, just about when CD's were being born(I still got my $400 Technics single Cd Player, too)! Dang, 20+ years ago, I'm starting to feel old. Well, I had a project that required my recording many hours worth of audio, so that I could get the original tapes back to the owner, but I didn't want to put them on a bunch of cassettes that I didn't have, cause I will eventually be putting them onto my computer for burning onto CDs.

So...I decided to fire up the ol' R2R. Turned the power on, and clunk, nothing moved!!! The take up reels would turn if I fast forwarded or rewound them(they are direct drive motors), but the main capstans and pinch rollers wouldn't engage or move. So....being the Xsive Xplorer I am, I pulled it out of it's double layered case(wooden outer, plastic inner) and pulled the main motor drive unit out to find the remnants of a very spongy/limpy main drive belt!

I remember being able to get a drive belt for my mom's Zenith Console combo AM/FM/Turntable/8-track player at Radio Shack a "few" years ago, so I drove to the store. "Sorry, we haven't carried tape deck belts in our parts catalog for the past 4 years I've been here", retorted the clerk!! Hmmmm, looks like a job for "Internet Surfer" ! !

A quick search led me to a wonderful place called Vintage Electronics.....boy I'm starting to feel old now!!! Dropped them an email, they responded the next day, they had the belt, and for $10.00 and $2.50 S&H I was able to order it, arrived in 3 days! I then got out the electronic parts cleaner, to loosen and remove the old dried out grease that was on the levers and pivots of the pinch roller assemblies, applied liberal amounts of White Lithium Spray grease to the contacting metal parts, mounted the new belt and reassembled the unit. I then had to gently abraid the mild corrosion(from years/decade of exposure to simple room humidity) that had built up on the playback and record heads!!

I then put on a Tape Reel I thought was blank, threaded it thru the drive mechanisms and onto the take up reel, and hit play! Wow, it was the Premier radio broadcast of Pink Floyd's The Division Bell from the local rock station I had recorded 'some time ago'?! Did I mention I was feeling kinda old?! But, the tape deck sprang back to life almost as good as when I had taken it out of it's box over 2 decades ago!!!! Well worth the $500.00 I paid for it back then!

NEW RUBBER IS GOOD ! ! Rock On!

Were you in the Army, Air Force, Marines or the Navy? The ship I was on, USS Kitty Hawk, pulled into Yokosuka a few times, and I even made it to Tokyo. Some very good deals could be had back in 'those' days. 77-78, 79-80. I bought a Minolta SLR camera for $200, in the Phillipines in 80, and I still use it often. My wife just bought me some nice lenses for it, and a photographer that I recetly met said the camera cost over $400 her in the states back then.
Division Bell, not THAT long ago, 94 or so. Saw the tour in Texas Stadium...I think Good album. Good show Still rockin'

        Hey there John,

I was a squid, in Yokosuka '81-83 at the Naval Hospital. Yeah, the exchange was my home away from home! My first real SLR was a Mamiya Sekor, but it got stolen. I then got a Canon AE-1 Program, took it with me to Japan, and actually had it repaired at the factory there. I still have it and use it for my "real" photography! I picked up most of my stereo equipment while over there, had a Kenwood Pre-amp/Tuner and Separate 120watt/channel x4 Amp; Graph. Eq.; picked up a Teac double auto reverse cassette, and some Pioneer HPM-900 and 700 Speakers. I sold the 700's many years ago, wish I hadn't!!

The rubber surrounds of the woofers rotted out a couple of years ago, found a replacement set on the net, and repaired them myself, good for another 20 years! I already had a Technics Direct Drive Turntable SL-D2, still running strong! My Preamp and Tuner died a while back, replaced it with a Technics A-V Tuner/amp combo, only 100watt/channel, but I rarely go past 5 watts anyways...."Yes, dear, I'll turn it down!!"

I'm also an honorary Texan, lived in San Angelo for a little over 4 years, from '75-79, went to a great concert in '76 in DFW: Fleetwood Mac, Steve Miller, Little River Band, Bob Welch all in one concert. Drove my little YamTX500 2up from San Angelo to ?Texas Stadium, had my Stereo stolen out of my hard saddlebags!!

Bruce, sorry you didn't know about searching the 'Net' for replacement belts, or was there even a "NET" back then!! !!
Just wanted to bring it up for others who also might be in the need for parts for "vintage" stuff at home!

          Hey TC!

What did you do in the 'Nav'? I was a ASM (aviation ground support equipment mechanic) on the Kitty Hawk from 77 to 81, went to Persain Gulf during the Iran hostage crisis of 79-80. That sucked! 74 days at sea.We were in the PI for Thanksgiving 79 when we deployed. We were supposed to be home on 17 December 79. When we finally got back to Subic, I bought airline tickets all the way from Manila to Portland, Maine. Had enough of the boat for a while. The only good thing to come from that trip was becoming a Golden Shellback. Then transferred to NAS Brunswick, Maine. Only 60 miles from home, but the base SUCKED! 5 Admirals based there. Had to be squared away ALL the time. Too much for a fleet sailor to handle. Are you from VA, or did get out when stationed at 'NOFU(K, Vagina'? I now work for American Airlines as a guess what...aviation ground support equipment mechanic! Been there for 18 years now. Not a bad gig for a small town boy from Maine.
As far as being an honorary Texan, don't ever call me that. I'm just a 'Yankee in Texas.' I don't care for the Bubba brained attitude of most of the guys here. I just don't get the cowboy mentality. Logging and offshore fishing were the mian occupations in Maine, but I don't dress like either of them. A real cowboy wouldn't be caught dead looking like some of these guys here. I'll bet I rode more horses than some of these guys. A pair of boots and a hat do not a cowboy make. Enough rambling. talk to you later, matey.

If you really want to feel old, mention 8-track tapes and players.I have estimated and guess 300 plus a player that can record from 8 track to cassate or LP to the same. Now that makes you feel old.Not over the hill and certianly not down in the valley

R2R is about the only thing I don't have. I used to, but I gave it away. (No 8 track, but they don't count) I still have vinyl. I've got the original "Dune" soundtrack on vinyl. Hell, I think I even have some Star Trek Original series music on vinyl that someone gave me as a joke. Just because you have that stuff, it doesn't make you old. I'm not even close to the apex of the hill yet.

Talk about vinyl how about the orginal Wheels of Fire by Cream.8 tracks at the time were alright in the car unless there wasn`t a good FM station that you could pickup. All anybody had to do was compare the sound and that was it.Now CDs are the thing,no compaints.Time marches on and somethings are better but talk about 8 tracks{useless really and tearup at nothing}and most people don`t know what your talking about. No I`m not over the hill-- just snailing along

                  Vinyl

I still have most of my best music on vinyl. Some are over twenty years old. All of my old Zeppilin: 1 thru Physical Graffitti, Yes: Time & A Word thru Drama, Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon thru Delicate Sound of Thunder, Aerosmith: 1 thru Rocks, Uriah Heap: (remember them, you old SOB's) Look at Yourself, Demons & Wizards, Magicians Birthday, & Greatest Hits, Boston: First three albums, and the list goes on...Old Stones, old Nugent, old Dead... Still have a bunch of stuff on Cassette too. The stuff on CD's are mostly newer releases, and some copies of the vinyl, so I can take them with me on trips. I still like to hear a pop or hiss now and then. In fact, I'm getting a new turntable when my Uncle Sam gives me back my money here in a few weeks
                  Still rockin'...After all these years

I still have a few Sheffield dirct-to disk vinyls. Did the reel-to-reel (Teac) bit for a long time, also had 8-track recorder and cassette decks. Now burn most of my stuff to CDs, but recently bought a Saturn for commuting (has a cassette deck) so I hooked up the Denon deck and denon turntable and started recording to cassettes again. Not a lot, as I intend to replace the car's deck with a CD player, but with a commute of 60+ miles a day I wanted a few tunes. For anyone with a Mac, look into the iMic....works well for transfering old vinyl and cassettes into your computer.

If anyone has a set of JBL L-65 Jubal speakers to sell, let me know.

Me too, although many of mine are 30-40 years old! I pretty much have only bought cd's for new music since the nineties. It's funny how some artists have put pops & hiss on new music to make it sound like it was on vinyl.

Aaaaaah the sweet sound of a well kept LP playing with a new stylus fitted!

CD's only cover the range 20Hz-20KHz - This is supposed to be the full range the human ear can hear...... BULS**T!!!

Sittin' back with my eyes closed listening to Pink Floyd with my younger mates sayin' "Is this a different recording? I'v never heard that before!" Sorry boys, we took a BIG step back in sound reproduction when we switched to CD from LP.... FWIW.

It is a real PITA having to turn over the 'big black CD' as my kids call them, every twenty minutes, and then do the Discwasher thing. (Anybody still have one of those?) The album side always seems to end when your in the middle of something ...but...it does bring some memories, or flashbacks

Yeah, I've got over 500 albums that I've collected over the past 30 years, carried them with me all over the country and to Japan and back. I had my own 8-track recorder, played my favorite LPs once to record them onto the 8-tracks, even mapping out the times so that the songs wouldn't get cut in half during a track change. Then again when I got into Cassettes. I'm doing it again converting them into CD's. I've got 3 discwashers, just purchased the latest one last year!! Yes, I've bought a modest number of CD's, mostly stuff I didn't already have, or to replace a severely damaged LP.

What a lot of people describe as the natural sound of LP's has been attibuted to the harmonic frequencies that are created during the analog reproduction, vs. the sterile digital CD!!?? The CD's have a wider dynamic range from 0 db to 110db, albums dont' go quite that far. Perhaps we got too used to the RIAA equalization our amps did to the raw LP signals which brings out the bass and highends better at lower volumes, like a "loudness" switch!?

Turn the LP over?? You don't have one of those long spindle thingys so you can stack 4 or 5 of them and then let them flop down one after the other!??
