Walked a lot of rail, camped at the tracks alot, about a month ago was the last time.Rode a few freights but now it is only Amtrak but I have taken them from here in Cincinnati to Chicago to Portland,San Diego over to New Orleans and Memphis.

          • Thinking of the homeless guys I see..socks and coats? but then I,this is gonna sound wierd, very practical, they won't get jumped for it.It keeps and can be eaten in many ways...spam..I know but if you think about it is not such a dumb idea.It keeps, eaten cold or cooked, last longer than a cock roach.
I eat the stuff when I go camping, good for a snack right out of the can, wouldn't want a steady diet of the stuff...some times I have it for breakfast with eggs, make a sandwich...
Am I nutz or do you have a better idea?

                Hi Bill,
Very practical as the US Army found in WWII.
Getting protein in their diet is a challenge for the homeless so you are on to something. be sure it has a key to open the can or there will be a frustrated hungry guy.

                • I don't have a big heart just....I have had a good life.I don't wanna know their story but don't wanna go thru charities as I just wanna help those who I see on the streets along the tracks picking up cans and scrap.
Thanks for saying I am not a nut I just do things a bit differently at times.
Good point about the key.P38 would work or a knife.
I almost got a couple of guys who were drifters waiting on a train south some burgers..talking to them for a minute and did not trust them.
No dead line on what I wanna do..just been thinking about it when I am in my car sitting by the tracks.
I don't wanna sit with them and have coffee or next to the fire..I am no saint, just realistic.Thanks.
                  I do believe in this...

Some window shopping for you: http://uncommonjourneys.com/theme/luxury-train/

I know it would take a lottery win to be able to go but we can dream and perhaps get some ideas of places to go.

                    • Thanks Phil...I thought about those but I think I have been on all Amtrak has to offer from Chicago to New Orleans to Seattle to San Diego many times.Close to 100,000 miles.
I am looking into a very small rv so I can stop and smell the roses and follow the tracks for a few months at a time.I think my mc days are winding down
As you say the tours are nice but then with the single tax..can't afford it or won't spend it.
It might be time for me to do what we wanted to do since we were 18..hit the road.
I have done it many times by van.mc or train but this time I won't have any time limits.

                      • Hi Bill,
you could be gone for years if you follow the rails and backroads while smelling the roses or sage brush and tumble weed Sounds like an Excellent Adventure to me. Hang the bike on one of those carries on the back of the RV and have something to ride locally to where you find yourself ?
Be sure yo take a small computer and with free wifi you can stay in touch.
good time of year to buy an RV in our end of the continent.

Do get a passport. You are always welcome up here in Canada.
Summer and Fall are best for RV travel. Lots to see and do.

Then you'd like even better the Durango to Silverton even older coal/steam fired locomotive running on narrow gauge tracks. There's approx. six of those locomotives for extras when they run as many as three trains in summer for a great tourist attraction pulling open and enclosed cars.

Looking at used Road Trek vans.Gas,under 50,000 miles,Chevy frame..I figure when I do get one I will just go out around Oh Ky and In to see what it needs and how I wanna set it up.My 11 might be lonely for awhile.
Something I have never done with an rv,something new.I am lucky enough to be able to do this.
