  • Can't bring my self to part bike out!

I’m having a hard time parting out bikes. Every time I look at the bikes that I get for a parts bike I keep thinking “It’s not that bad, I could fix it”. The only bike that I didn’t have those thoughts is the 79SF that was literally a pile of parts with the frame cut up.

I just recently purchased an 80G and an XJ1100 that are in sad shape. I got them with the intent to use as parts bikes. The poor XJ the kids of the original owner tried to make a bobber out of it, and failed (Luckily they didn’t butcher the fame). Almost every electrical part was cut off instead of just unplugging them. The 1/2 motor mounts are missing, no seat, no grab bar, no warring harness to speak of, missing head light, left and right handle bar controls, and front fender and brakes. I know it has the 2nd gear issue.
What it does have, a good tank just need to be repainted, headers (no collector or mufflers), engine (have not checked compression yet), carbs and air box, front and rear wheels, rear MC and brakes, side covers, gauges (but all the wires are cut), center and side stand.

The G seems to have everything except seat, exhaust and left hand controls. I also have titles for both bikes.

I don’t know if I’m just optimistic, a glutton for punishment or just have some sort of addiction.

Does anyone else get a bike for parts then can’t bring themselves to part it out for own use or to sell?

Anyway I now have two future projects (as long as the compression checks out). I know the cost of fixing them up will be more than I can sell them for (I just cant help my self. (I will post pictures of them when I get home from work.)

I know someone here that could use some XJ parts if you would consider parting it out for a good cause.

      Many times over.

I have a 79SF that is almost done in the garage right now.PO sold it to me for parts for $150.00
It has 8000 original miles & the title says it was bought new in 1979 by the PO. Sat in his garage since 81 because he tried to do a wheely in a parking lot & dumped it. broke a bunch of stuff on the right side, bent the bars, etc. It's almost done, & is looking like brand new. Purrs like a kitten. WTF!
BUT, last year I had to cut up a great 80 standard because there was no way I could get a title. & I tried everything. I've gotten titles for at least 5 of these kritters that came without them. Sadly, not that one. A 20000 mile bike that needed just a seat & tank

Got one of those sitting in the garage right now waiting for my lazy a$$ to put it together. Got all the parts, just need the ambition.

          been there, done that also...

It sounds like you need another parts bike so you have a donor to fix these bikes!

            Parting an XJ?

If you do decide to part the XJ, I would possibly want the tank. Mine has pinholes from rust and they were haphazardly repaired and look ugly. If I had a second tank, I could do a good custom paint job at my leisure with no down time. I have relation in Layton that visits occasionally and they could bring it with them.

I've an 80G parter without the title. Bought a titled frame to transfer everything to. I was on the cusp of getting rid of it all but there's just something about these old bikes.

I did sell off my 79SF. A number of minor things were breaking - cracked Kerker, broken speedo, carb pilot circuit needing work. The new owner seemed intent on restoring it.
