  • Monday Morning Observations

More Monday morning observations (from Dallas):

46 degrees is a perfect temperature for 5:00am January 12. The stiff south breeze makes it feel warmer than it really is, and introduces that very clean, balmy, just rained smell to the world.

Southbound US 75, just south of the "High 5" construction (I-635, US 75) the left lane of US 75 runs on the shoulder for the construction. Striped and everything...the only problem is that there is a utility access hatch just left of center in the lane (almost in the left tire track) and the cover is missing. This hole is over a foot wide and probably 2 to 2-½ feet long! Too deep to see the bottom...Hit that at 80+ and you may go airborne (probably NOT a good thing on a Valk)! In the dark, the construction, the traffic, I cleared it by at least ¼ of an inch. Phew!

Once again, the loop-2-loop exit ramp from RL Thorton (spur something or other that connects US 75/I45 to I-35) is covered with diesel fuel. Trucks or busses using this ramp with no gas cap, splatter the entire outside of the curve with diesel. This is old, shiny smooth concrete anyway...the term "ice skating" comes to mind. So does the term "*!^$%!#&#^!". An example of that used in a sentence is: "!@#$%^ @#$$ @#@$$#@^& and oh !^$%!#&#^! this #$@#$ bites #@$^!" GHAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Valkyries hold the road better under extreme circumstances if you howl (or growl) during the maneuver. This is a corollary to the "scream and leap" principle.

The adrenaline rush achieved when entering a loop-2-loop ramp at fairly high speed only to discover it is covered in diesel is a bit more than really needed at 5:00am on a Monday. No wonder I don't need drugs!

When you enter a 20mph loop-2-loop ramp at 35mph, discover it is covered with diesel fuel, brake as hard as you dare, and move hard inside to get out of the fuel before you hit the sharpest part of the corner, watch out for the guys behind you.

When a moron in an SUV decides to pass you at 30 mph on the outside of a diesel soaked corner of a one lane loop-2-loop exit ramp, he's not gonna make it.

The old NASCAR adage of aiming for the wreck, figuring it won't be there when you get there, works pretty well.

The only way to clean the diesel off the tires and the adrenaline out of the system after just such an incident is at least 100 miles of high-speed freeway riding. An unplanned breakfast in Cleburne is highly recommended.

When the boss asks why you went to Cleburne (at least 50 miles past my exit for work) and you tell him, "Traffic sucked", he won't buy it. "My dog ate my homework" did not work either. He seemed to accept the "Gas is cheaper there" excuse. (it's not). That's good...I was going to use the "scream and leap" principle next...

Ride safe guys and gals...I'll see you on the road!

    High 5

You poor SOB! I can't imagine having to drive on Central Expwy/ High 5 every day. Hell it's bad enough having to deal with the 121/183 split in Bedford, and the 114/121 split in Grapevine. I have noticed that Dallas Co. drivers are much worse than those in Tarrant Co. I hate driving/ riding in Dallas. Trying to get back to Airport freeway from Fairpark/ Starplex is hell, especially trying to get off IH45, back to IH35. After a concert is no time to have to make any quick traffic manuvers.

Heh heh...I worked nights last week...getting off work in downtown Dallas at 2:00am Friday and Saturday nights is an education!

Me on the bike, and 5873 drunk drivers on the road. Especially after the Stars game Friday night!

Gad! (wondering why I can't carry a rocket launcher)

        Rocket launcher

A fanny pack with some good sized rocks in it works quite well! and it dosen't leave a smoke trail. Then sheer horespower, and riding ability will get you out of most jams. What really sucks is being on the freeway after a bubba (NASCAR) race at TMS on IH 35. Everybody thinks they are Dale Ernhardt.

You poor *&#$%#... 46 degrees at 5am! They are calling for a HIGH of 10 degrees here tomorrow, probably with a nice cooling north breeze of 50 mph or so. You southern people make me sick!
Seriously though, think you can put me up for a month or 4 if I want to come down for a visit? Got any spare bikes or should I bring mine?

Hi Willy. This is the John who sent you the pilot screws. I grew up in Fairfield, but I sure don't miss the winter. Did you get your bike runnig yet? I put the carbs from my 78 into my 80 and what a difference! I just put a Jardine header on yesterday. Got to ride today, 70 some degrees! Still in the low 60's at this time.

                    GO PATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                      Thursday Run

Well I may not live in Texas but I was able to blow the cobwebs out of the Ratbyk and my own head today. Plus 12c (53f) today here in Sooke. Bright sunshine, the road was greasy but no traffic. Put 80km on it with a run out west coast road along the Pacific. Where the hell is Sooke you say. Believe it or not it is in Canada. Part of the great white north but we rarely get any of that stuff.
The south end of Vancouver Island, about 40km west of Victoria BC.

                        hi john
i haven't done the carbs yet
I'm working on a table lift
                        see the post "table lift"
                        i'm currently painting it
built it at work only get 1 hour a night to work on it
but the building is heated, and having the run of a machine shop helps
i hope to finish up and bring the last of it home saturday
its 11:00 pm here and 15 below, and the wind is howling out there, my garage is not heated except by a wood stove, but in this weather it would take hours to get it up to a working level
so i wait for a warmer day

SWMBO and I just got back from a great ride. Weather about 77F and bright sunshine! There was so many bikes out that it looked like a parade. Maybe the roads arn't so twisty here, but at least we can ride!
