  • Rubber parts conditioner. HELP !!!

    I need help !!!!
The rubber joints from the airbox to the carbs on the XJ I'm restoring are hard as rocks. They've been stored for the better part of a year out of the sun in a patio storage bin in my patio, in the shade. Today I took the airbox out to check it out and start getting it ready for installation and discovered that the joints were quite hard.
I remember reading here, within the last year, about this "liquid stuff" that you submerge your rubber parts in and it restores them to 'like original' condition. The user said it restored the original flexibility and pliability.
Does anybody recall what this solution is called and where I can get it ?
I've searched the entire product evaluation directory, since the begining, without success. Apparently it didn't make it into this directory. I'll post it if someone remembers and it works for me.
I looked up the joints in Boats.net for a cross reference and they are unique to the XJ - no cross reference to other applications.... YIKES !!!! Just like the rear master cylinder.....
On a very positive note... my air filter still appears to be useable !!!!!
I will appreciate any and all help with this.
    Gracias, amigos y amigas.

    Robert,

Mineral oil (baby oil) will work if you're patient. It's cheap enough. I use vinyl and rubber dressing from CARQUEST. It looks like grape drink, but works at least as well as anything else.

            Thanks Don

Yep, That's the one I remember seeing. I kind of remembered it was posted by a neighbor from the north. Now the search begins to see where I can get it here .
            Thanks again.

                Bodypro No longer available.

Yikes, Marty. It could be worse you could be in Iraq or one of those godforsaken countries...

Called my local NAPA store, the guy looked it up and found it in the Canadian NAPA parts catalog and it's listed as "No longer available" Darn !!!
Any further ideas are more than welcome.

I've got one of those cheapy HF sonic cleaners, and a undiluted fill of simple green along with using the heater does a pretty good job of cleaning rubber parts. Softens them a bit too, but if yours are really hard that may not do it.

Could just use the SG and heat it on the stove too...

                    Robert,

Get the CARQUEST stuff. It will do the job. Mineral from the hardware store or unscented baby oil from Walgreens. (unless you like the pretty scent)

Yes, Mr. DAVINCI, JFK. I'm here only briefly. I'm going to New Jersey tomorrow!

I'd try first just heating them up with hot water or maybe a heat gun to soften them up. I have a set of K&N pods over here if you need some. JAT

                        Thanks for the offer Phil.
I was mulling over how to remove them without cracking them, so I can then treat them with something that will renew/improve them.
I have a heatgun I can use to soften them. I'll try that.
                        Thanks

Also, if you're not in a hurry you could just leave them out in the sun for an hour or two tomorrow, help soften them up, supposed to be 80º.

                            Rubber

Cobia I've tried baby oil, baby vaseline and most of the junk sold supposidly as restorer but nothing works as good as "Meguiar's Glaze" Vinyl & Rubber cleaner/conditioner. Comes is a spary bottle and smells pretty strong. it's the only one |I've found that cleans as well as restores.
Before you try to remove the velocity stacks, soak them in hot water for as long as you can to soften them up. I also used a permanent marker and numbered them and put witness marks on the upper box and stacks for reassembly orientation.
