  • Software problems again.

You guys are going to start hiding when I come here again with yet another software problem.
Well here goes. I am running Photo Explosion 3. It's a little long in the tooth and I want to up grade a FREE version of it or some other program that does the same stuff.
I tried GIMP, which turned out LIMP. You can not get the pictures out of your camera unless it goes thru a Twain program. That is too complicated for me. The old Photo Explosion just took the pics off your camera and displayed it. I tried something like photoshop, it didn't work at all I went to the Photo Explosion and tried to download Photo Explosion 4.0, but every time I tried to download it, I got GIMP instead.
Has any one out there got a decent idea of what to do next???

A friend put FastStone Image Viewer 4.0 on my puter and seemed it to like it. Been on here a while and since I have a different camera I haven't used it.

Was free when It was loaded.

      Camera Image Downloads

Hi, GIMP is more an Image Editor rather than the download software you are looking for. Yes, GIMP Shareware-Free but as you tried, does not do what you need to easily get the images off your camera.
-1st question I'd have is what kind of camera are you using?? What kind of file format is generated by the camera (when using P.E. 3.0)? jpg or something else? Most cameras come with some kind of Picture Viewer / Camera to PC Download software. If you could access the camera manufacturers site you may be able to download the Viewer and PC software for your exact camera. That would fix the problem if you could get the download.
-2nd question is what kind of operating system on the computer?? WinXP, Mac, Vista, Win7. That is not an issue with Photo Explosion but could be with other software. Also, I assume you have a UBS 2.0 or 3.0 type connection from the computer to the camera?

As for Photo Explosion 3.0, were you using a trial version or had you purchased the license? The Photo Explosion 4.0 might be available as a trial

but the box version of P.E. 4.0 is $49.95 plus shipping and I do not see a place to download the software or download a free trial on the manufacturers site. 3.0 is $29.95. As you said, the downloads listed as free loop just loop you around to GIMP or something download that is not PE 4.0.

Depending on your camera, computer and operating system you should be able to PnP the camera that opens a Viewer / Download tool right from the Operating System. Yeah, not much help yet, but having a little more background info would help with the diagnosis. If you can't download the actual software for the camera or get the OS viewer to work then it's "Go to Plan B" with the camera type and pc info in hand.

I will never understand why anyone uses ANY software to get the pictures off their camera. When you plug it into your PC, it should show up as a new "drive", or removable device in the "My Computer" section. Double-click on that, look for the DCIM folder, and open/view/move/rename your pictures like any other file on your PC.

Of course, editing pictures is another issue altogether, but most people just want to see the pictures they took, and don't need to edit them.

Without the transfer software my mom can never find the pictures again so I just move the pictures for her and set up a shortcut to the directory with the latest pictures. The shortcut opens an image browser with the tools I installed to view, edit, and print her pictures whenever she wants to instead of using the software that came with her camera.

            Hey Jack,

On the same website for Photo Explosion 4, I found their support page:

            http://www.novadevelopment.com/support/updates/

And on it is a FREE Update for "3" that makes it VISTA compatible!

Don't know what OS you're running? When you say it's getting long in the tooth...what is it NOT doing that you would like it to do??

As Bug said, most of the cameras now a days provide photo managing and editting software bundled! However, many folks find the Managing portion a bit of a pain, and just use the Windows File Explorer to just locate the photos on the camera's folder, and drag/drop them into your My Documents/photos or whatever folder you want. You may/will want to create folders or subfolders to help organize your photos the way you want, either by date, or by EVENT..ie. wedding/ birthday, vacation, etc.!

THEN you can use a more modern photo editting program to perform the editting functions....crop or red eye reduction, etc.!

Another transfer option is to take the memory card out of the camera and put it into a multiformat card reader on your 'puter...if it has one!

Curious to hear what camera you have...what OS...etc.!

Thank you one and all. You came through again. By working your suggestions, I deduced that all the usb ports are down. Looks like a motherboard problem. I found this by messing with the cameras usb port and and realized that the printer would not print also. But the port going to the monitor is fine. I have the computer that this one replaced with X/P on it. I turned it on and hooked up the printer up and it worked just fine. I then download the pictures from the camera and that worked fine too. So tomorrow it goes to the shop.
              Thanks again.

I didn't see your followup reply until today. Hopefully the blast of cold weather has slowed you down, and you haven't taken the suspect computer to the shop yet!? There are a fair number of geeks on here, and we are happy to help you troubleshoot it further if you're willing to try.

How old is the "NEW" computer, and what OS is it running...Vista or Win7?
Most branded computers have fairly small limited warranties, and unless you spent $$ for extended warranty coverage, it's probably beyond the warranty?

That's kinda odd for all of the usb ports to go bad? Software issues could possibly cause that as well as a mobo going bad. IF it's a branded computer, tell us what brand/model or service tag number which can aid us in searching info on it.

Okay, just a thought vs. $$$$ to some computer store geek squad!
