I am pretty much over the whole 'Harley attitude' thing. It is so 'high school'. I love to ride and feel a certain connection with other riders, regardless of the brand of bike.
I try to always give the little wave to other bikes, the only ones that EVER seem to wave back are:

Goldwing riders - most of these guys have the biggest smile on their face when riding. I love these guys, you can tell they are riding for the joy of it and absolutely love the sport. Of course they are also proly some of the few riders that arent getting hemroids from riding all day

Other Jap touring bikes - these guys are also very pleased with their mount and love riding. Most are always happy to see another rider. There guys are also smiling because they bought a brand new touring bike and still have money in their pockets.

Various older metrics - Like us, I find most guys on an older jap bike are 'real motorcyclists' these guys know how to ride and know how to work on their mounts. They love the sport and the fact that thier bike is paid for. These are riding for riding sake and not to pose for other bikers. They may be riding and XS1100, or a GX1000, or even a CM 400. This description often applies to older Brit bikers as well.

    Those that dont wave back:

Harley riders - 'If it aint a Harley, it aint a motorcycle' (yeah right!) That seems to be the opinion of every harley rider out there today. It never ceases to amaze me that these guys have such a high opinon of themselves and their bikes that they can't be screwed to even acknowlege that your riding a motorcycle too.
Mind you, I don't need any affirmation from any other biker to make me feel better about myself, but hey what is wrong with a little brotherly wave HUH? Well IMHO, there are two kinds of riders on a harley. There is the 'Harley rider', this is the one previously spoken of here, loud and proud. Dislikes, even HATES other motorcylists if not on a harley themselves.
Then there is the motorcylist that chooses to ride a harley, this guy just wants to ride and happens to ride a harley. You can sometimes see these guys riding with other bikes and they will usually wave and even smile. (the later type seems to be a dying breed)

Then there is the BMW rider - 'How dare you wave at me!' This goes way back for me. I remember riding with my Dad going to rallies when I was a kid. He was the ultimate friendly biker. He would stop a talk to anyone on any motorcycle. We once stopped at a diner for lunch and a BMW rider was getting on his bike. We pulled up next to him on his Honda 750. Dad said "hi how you doin'" The man just glanced up at us and the bike as said nothing as he put his helmet on and rode off. I asked dad why he was so rude. Dad said he was a typical BMW rider. He didnt say it with malace, just mater-o-fact about it. Again there are BMW riders, and motorcyclist who choose to ride BMW's.

disclaimer: Now I realize that not every biker fits these descriptions, this is just an observation and a general broad brush statement. So dont go getin' offended.

I started on Harleys, fist a '45' than a '74' (cubic inch displacement.) I rural Wisconsin, where I grew up, lot of gravel roads and those wide 16 inch tires worked much better than the narrow tires on Japanese bikes. Always fiddeling with them, particularly carbs. Sold them, later got married and switched to Hondas. Could rice them thousands of miles with little concern of breakdowns and much more comfortable for a passenger. Later still I move into Yamahas, though I still have 2 Hondas (a '78 550F and a '69 CT90) in my garage waiting for resurection.

I have fond memories of my Harleys, and may own one again in the future. While the harley camp seems polarized into two groups, the 'real' riders and the posers, I have found the real riders to be friendly and helpful people.

        I couldnt agree more Jerry!
I have two good friends, one on a fat boy, (he will be at the TeXSive rally) and one on a UltraGlide. Both love their bikes and are the greatest ppl.

It's ironic that my 2 best riding buddies ride a Harley and BMW.

New thread...who do you ride with?

At my old job there were 3 of us who rode together at times. Bikes were my XJ, a Honda 750 Super Sport, and a Harley FLH. Another guy (and his wife as passenger) on his Virago 920 joined us once in a while; he had a prostetic left lower leg and foot, was always a hoot to see him riding that bike......

In general, I find almost everyone waves on the open road, around metro areas the percentage shrinks greatly, regardless of brand affiliation.

Of my main two riding buddies, one rides a customized Harley Springer Special and the other a BMW R1150GS. Two other friends I ride with have a Harley Heritage Classic and a BMW K1100LT. It's kinda cool when we're all together since it's such a diverse mix of rides.

I think I need to say that not all of us BMW riders are stuck up snobs. I ride my R1100S with pride and sometimes even get snubbed by my own brethren. K1200RS riders snub me sometimes...most of the non-helmet riders on my trip to Cape Cod would wave at me in my fully-laden bike with full gear.

Harley guys - there are cool ones and ignorant ones.
Can't debate with the morons because facts mean nothing.

If a guy is boderline moron and shows some glimmer of brains, I will point out how many Nippondenso, Mikuni/Kehin and Showa parts actually exist on their bikes - If I want to get in a jab, I'll point out how the japs saved their asses with all those quality parts in the AMF years.

Then I lower myself and say sumthin like "and who gives a fk anyways, lets ride"

Bikes is bikes - There are a few bikes I can't stand to look at (Jap mini cruisers), but I always feel that at least that guy or gal is out there riding and not in their cage.

                      I wave at them all.

There's all sorts of ppl that don't wave... BMW riders almost always do.
Harley riders... well... depends. Sometimes they do, sometimes not. Most of them do.
However... not in the cities.. Almost nobody waves... too many bikes I guess...

Friends and their bikes... let's see... Most of the riding I did with sbd was with a friend that has a 94 kawasaki ZZR1100 (ZX1100) and a 76 Moto Guzzi LeMans 850 mk1.
Then there are a few other friends with
Kawasaki ZXR750 (Yep, the good looking one... of the 91 vintage)
                          Kawasaki GPZ550
                          Yamaha XV535
                          Yamaha XVS1100
                          BMW F650
                          BMW R1100R
                          BMW R100
                          Suzuki Bandit 1200
                          Kawasaki Z1000
                          Honda CB500F
                          Honda VFR750F
bout 3 or 4 HDs... no sportsters tho... a dyna and 2 FLHsthCUI with all the stuff on...
                          etc...

None of these care, what u ride... well.. nobody that I know of does...

                          LP
If it doesn't have an engine, it's not a sport, it's only a game.

I have on occasion gone riding with my brother and his pals, which all have .....l'ys. I once went with my bud who has a XS11 as well. The bud I am talking about also has a brother with a ....ly. I know, it sounds confusing but stay with. Anyway when my bud goes with his bro, he tells me that he can't resist screaming past those kind. So we go out together with a couple of ....ly riders and once again bud says " we can't go for very long before putting them in there place". We waited till they were out front where the think they should be and blew past . We all can stand a little fooling around and should be able to hand a little out as well as taking it. I personally havn't had a bad experience with anybody but my brother, and I KNOW how to shut him up.... it's called a Yamaha!!
