Washington has some specific exemptions in it's laws for active-duty military due to all the bases here, but if you're not one of them, they don't apply...

I'll add to that to say people who are not lawyers in the State or even the County in which you are looking for advice. As you can clearly see in this thread alone and many others where this subject has been debated over the years, every state has its own laws on this and many other subjects.

Agreed. We are all the internet forum equivalent of jailhouse lawyers. The only way to know what's going to happen is to do it, and if there is doubt, consult a lawyer who is conversant in the area of law for the region you are going to. No matter what the motor vehicle people may say, a good lawyer may know the law better than they do, provided you are willing to push things to the point of going to court, including the cost of doing so, but do get proper legal advice before making any such decision, that is provided you feel there is value enough in the vehicle to make it worth your while (in my case it would HAVE to be sentimental value, nothing else would do).

MI was easy, TX not so sure

In MI a bill of sale on these older bikes was very easy to deal with. I have several barn finds that now have valid titles. My questions to DPS here in Texas suggest that it would be way more work to get from bill of sale to title. If I went that route I would have a friend in MI buy it, title it and then sell it back to me.
I have a bike and I am not afraid to use it
