I started out with an HJC CL-15 full face helmet when I got back into riding 5 years ago. Good price and at the time what I thought was a good fit made the decision pretty easy for me.

Since my HJC now has 5 years on it, and I've been exposed to lots of helmet info over the past 5 years from magazines, forums, etc, I chose to go with the new Shoei Quest full face helmet this fall.

There is no comparison. Not just the fit, but the quality of the fit that the Shoei brings to the table compared to the HJC. It's a lighter helmet, much quieter, very well ventilated when needed, and just plain feels better on my head. I suspect there are similar comparisons that could be drawn to other lower priced helmets of other brands as well. Even if the helmet fits in the purest sense, the quality of the fit is what I can see as the big difference as explained above. As well, most of us (I think?, I hope?) wear ear plugs when we ride, but regardless of that, the Quest is extremely good with aerodynamics and keeping it quieter than any helmet I've test rode, even with ear plugs.

I'm not saying or implying by any stretch of the imagination that the Shoei might protect me better in an accident than an HJC or other brand, but I do know when I swap helmets just to show the 'ol HJC some love, it's a night and day difference in comfort in favor of the Shoei.

Competition accessories has the Shoei Quest in solid colors for $330 right now with free shipping over $100. I bought mine from a local dealer, paid $20more for it plus tax but kept it local. This dealer also donates items each year to a silent auction I help to organize, so it's the least I can do to support them for supporting the auction.

Maybe the price alone is a deterrant for many of us, however I am convinced with helmets, at least for me, I get what I pay for and amortizing the cost of a helmet over a 5 year span is pretty easy justification.

It was 400gs I read a similar article while looking for this one and it said that something like 40% of the dot helmets tested fail.

Cobia the helmet I used when you came to the rally was tbw blue agv. I paid 300 bucks for it. The helmet I used this year at the rally is the new silver one I got for 80 bucks plus shopping...
Also I don't care about Snell anyway my agvs use bsi which is more stringsnt than dot and Snell.

Also I read something about the way dot generates their numbers is skewed. Something about using a formula based off a helmet design from 1973 or something like that.

Do yourselves a favor and look at Valentino rossis crash from last year where he broke his leg. 180 MPH I think. He was thrown like a rag doll. He uses an agv helmet similar to mine. O won't be switching to dot only because of s skewed test...

The blue one above is a pic I downloaded my blue one is an XL not amedium... interestingly my silver one is a 2xl and it fits tighter than the XL... another reason its good to try them on in the store...

Zeus Modular, I would not buy another.

The 33 is a little noisy but I couldn't justify the cost of the Nolans or the top line Arai's.

Helmets fit differently by manufacturer, I wouldn't buy one with out fit testing. If you have buddies with different brands ask how they feel about their's and if you can test ride with it.

Cheap helmet. I bought a modular helmet. Zeus lowest price. Rated low in magazine tests. Noisy, weak latches...Would not recommend it. For a few dollars more I could have bought a nolan. (Money I spent on that helmet was mostly wasted.) Helmet test article I read after purchase told me as much.

I wear a Shoei TZ-1 because of the 33 helmets I tried on it was the most comfortable (1st criteria for me). It also was on sale (2nd). And, it makes me look cool by covering my ugly face.
I can't help it if it is also DOT and Snell approved.

am currently using a modular HJC. the fit for me is great love the retractable shades, but it is kinda noisey, and the vent tab on top...was rather flimsy. other wise seems like a sturdy bucket.
if it has screws in it i am gonna screw with it!

I also use the HJC modular. I have a Shoei that I DO NOT like, and I did waste $80 on a cheap modular that is going into the trash, after getting cut up. It was a China made helmet I bought from a vender at Dream Machines to replace the Shoei. It fit well, and I liked it for the first month. after that, things started to go wrong with the latch, and plastic bits started to break!
As almost everyone here has stated, the BEST helmet is the one you WILL WEAR EVERY RIDE.
As for full face, I was using a Bell full face in the late 60's, so they WERE available! They just had this little window, and no peripheral vision to speak of.

                      Hi DiverRay,

What Shoei model didn't work for you? Was it a fit issue? Just curious...

I have 3 helmets all good quality ...Just ask yourself how much your head and face are worth to you intact? 1 Shoei Qwest and 1 Shoei TZR and 1 HJC SyMax2 modular... All full face helmets...For me the fit and finish of Shoei is the best and most comfortable...Its in the middle of the cost spectrum at about the $300 range. The HJC gets the least amount of use. Mostly in the summer. And is not nearly as comfortable or quiet as either Shoei...but still pretty good...also in the same general price range...IMHO you get what you pay for...YMMV

I can tell you from experience that the HJC helmet can save your brain and head on impact. Without the one I had on a year and a half ago, I would not be around to type this.
