  • This site has a twin

I was online, looking for information about 'an object' I own and ran across a forum like this one.
As I am in the process of lurking there, I notice an uncanny similarity.
As newbies ask questions (usually the same ones) they get polite replies and are then directed to the search function. There is a large contigent of members that think 'the object' should be restored to it's original condition. Others think 'the object' is fine as originally designed but there are a few modifications that bring it "up to date". Others strip "the object" to it's component pieces and customize the whole thing to where it is no longer recognizable to it's original form.
Members give, loan, sell parts and there is a sense of "brotherhood". All are civil to each other (there are hints to ex-members that have been banned) and it's an all-around nice forum..... as is this one.
I'm glad I have two good hobbies.

Ok, you can't tell us about the twin of the site and leave it at that you know. Does this twin site also have another site started by those former members as well? Come on, inquiring minds want to know.

Got that same exact feeling about this site when I first came around ... and they basically call you an idiot or accuse you of being blasphemous for thinking or speaking about changing it.

'OlGuilty, only when a model is still ALL in tact or transformation produces safety related issues that us ole' geezers already are aware.

            Hi Jay,
and if you remove safety-related parts from your machine so it looks cool, that's one thing you ain't likely to do; get old, that is.

OGB, don't forget that yer gonna get different opinions, different from each other...and different than yer own! That difference is what I appreciate about the forums because those variances are what I learn from. By comparing posts I learn and sometimes even change my mind.

If you want to be different and build a truly unique machine you will need to become accustomed to being told it can't or shouldn't be done. Some of the people will give great, useful advice and others will leave a smelly pile of excrement. It's up to you to decide what to use and what to discard.

Enjoy yer build. I hope it turns out good for ya. I look at my XS11 with a custom eye once in a while, but then I ride it and I'm reminded that it works so well that I have no real desire to grab the angle grinder any more. Fortunately, there are other machines in the garage that can suffer the indignities of my hacksaw and welder.

Yea, it just pisses me off how some people can be so closed minded and ignorant. Like if they were around when we were in horse and buggy .... we'd probably still be riding around in horse and buggy in 2012. "There is NO way to change that, HOW DARE YOU SAY YOU CAN USE MORE THAN ONE HORSE ON THAT BUGGY !!!" or "What is this engine you speak of ... off with his head!!!"

Like that bullet style headlight by the way, and how you have it mounted. Dude put some aftermarket light on mine when I bought it so I'm trying to figure how to mount one that doesnt have mounts on the side, but rather on the bottom like yours... how/where did you get that mounting bracket by the way. =)

Easy, easy.... It's not 'ignorance', it's more like finding out your sister (a XS11) is going to marry an apparent deadbeat (a mod-mad new owner); it may be a marriage made in heaven, but then again she may have to suffer abuse and then be tossed aside, and you're worried about how it's all going to turn out. Trust me, after selling my first bike (2008 GSX R600), I will NEVERRRRRR EVERRRRRR sell another bike again. I, literally, almost cried when the guy was driving off with it in the back of his truck. I had to do it though because of lawyer fees and such. Never again though ...

I do like to modify stuff, but I like to be ..... "Unique", thats all. I dont wanna be like every other Tom and Dick with the only difference in my bike being, "hey, those are nice foot pegs"... lol

One of the biggest problems many of us have, is there are fewer and fewer of these bikes in basically complete condition anymore. And guys buy bikes that are complete and pretty much running and hack them up, and then more often then not, quit part way through and that bike becomes just a bunch of parts. The problem is, if one wants to build a custom, there really are a lot of bikes that are already thrashed and incomplete, and doing the custom job on them is a service, because then it keeps a bike that would be going to the crusher on the road and loved, and lets that complete and original bike stay that way. Either way, a well done chopper/bobber is still well done, many of us just wish those doing those would choose the more common ones, and the already trashed ones at that as their starting points.

I think it's important that you understand the why we feel like we do, as I estimate that probably 6 out of 10 who start into a project like you are strip the bike down, cut up the frame, decide they have bitten off more than the desire to take on, and just part the whole thing out and a bike is gone forever. I have and engine and frame, not even because of that, but because of a valve cover gasket leak. Determined after the rest of the bike had been parted out because they thought the engine was toast.

Seems like everywhere you look on the internet you find a "project bike", bobber or a hardtail for sale. All tore down and cut up sitting in pile in a garage.

Even harder to look at the number of them that are xs1100's.

                          Just my opinion.
