OIL for my XJ1100J

Oil is a personal preference and everyone has their personal favorites. By the manual 20/50 without friction modifiers is what you should use. Synthetic is slipperyer (is that even a word) and can seep out of small holes easier than conventional oil, synthetic also often causes clutch slip on old friction discs.
Try a few oils, find one YOU like and stick with it.Nathan

diesel 15w40 . . . .
I'm not a mech, but I change my oil every 3K, my filter every 6K, use Rotella 15W40 diesel, and she is smooth as a babies' arse. Most times I shift up without clutch, and she gears real quiet . . .Mike Farrington

Get on the throttle and listen to the engine rev as the clutch is slipping. BTDT.Greg

any oils labled energy conserving... (usually on the back of the container)..you do NOT want...They contain Moly which makes the clutch slip...friction modifiers...
Synthetic or Dino is your choice...1980 XS650G Special-Two

The point is (which you made as well), use the oil most closely matching the grade and viscosity recommended by Yamaha, although exceeding the grade is fine, and even good an many cases as long as you stay away from energy conserving. An advantage of MC specific oils is they tend to stay away from anything that will adversely affect the wet clutch, and if you stay with the stuff you can get at auto parts stores, you can stay somewhat close to auto oil prices rather than the stupid prices MC shops want for their oil.Cy

+1 on the Castrol 4T. It's what I've been running in mine for the last year and a half, and the engine has both sounded better, had NO clutch slip, and the oil comes out nice and black at oil change (a sign that the oil is picking up and taking with it the nasty dirty stuff) (ok, so it's just a nice dark brown). No clattering, no stuff in the filter (before I installed the SOFA that is) and nothing to speak of on the drain plug. Still feels (yes, I'm old school taught by old school mechanics, taught to feel the oil when draining it out) nice and slick and such with no strange smells to the oil at 3k miles which is my oil change interval. Very little oil use in my case, I understand Greg's uses some, but he pushes his a good bit harder than I push mine. I might get an oil analysis done someday, but with the fairing I hear every little noise from the engine, including the oil burbling down the cam chain tunnel back to the bottom of the engine, so I go by the fact that in 20k miles, the engine noises haven't change measurably. I pay attention to both volume an timber of the engine sounds, as any change in those would point to some having gone wrong.Cy
