Well - sort of a newbie... At least to my "new" 83 XJ1100 - Yeah - we had them a couple extra years up here in Canada.
I just bought it so I could keep riding while I do a ground-up resto-mod on my 79 XS650. If you're on the XS650 Garage USA forum - you may recognize my name there....
The bike is in pretty good shape, but the PO wasn't much of a mechanic, so it does need some TLC. The carbs DESPERATELY need tuning (my XS is faster off the line than the XJ at the moment), I just bought a new battery for it (the PO boiled the old one dry - killed it but good), and I'll be giving it a good once-over to make sure that it's safe.
I've heard rumors that the electrical system is marginal (Same with my XS - must be a Yamaha thing....), and that the coils aren't too great either. On my XS, I swapped all the lights over to LED's, but I just read that that will make the signal canceller malfunction. Would it be the same with the brake/tail light and the idiot light on the dash?
I'll have to check the alternator brushes, too.
I know I've got work to do on the carbs - MAJOR flat spot off idle. I'm guessing that will be a needle adjustment. The choke is all wonky and it seems like there's a bunch of loose screws in the linkage, so I'll be checking that too. Idle is wandering all over - and does stupid things whenever I move the handlebars. I'll have to secure the cable under the tank. I'm also getting the occasional POP out of the right side exhaust. I'll have to get a YICS eliminator and balance the carbs properly.
It's being a bugger to start, but that may just be the wonky choke & idle - along with a weak battery, so I'll get those sorted out first. If it persists - I may be checking the coils, but after it warms up - it seems OK, so I'm not too worried right now.
Checking oils, brakes, etc.... So far so good......
And I downloaded the owner's and maintenance manuals, too. As well as the PO had the Canadian maintenance manual - in French and English, but the pics aren't very clear in it.
So far so good - as long as I don't need any more stitches from cutting my fingers when I am trying to cut open packages..... 4 1/2 hours to see the Dr - for 3 stitches.....
