  • Its amazing anyone gets the right parts

Found THIS on ebay, immediately noticed it is not an XS1100 engine, so I contact the seller and avise him he has an XJ engine, 650 I believe. He replies to me "XS110 title, XS1100 numbers, XS1100 parts, i'm sure your right thanks for your help". Of course the listing is unchanged. So I replt to him that I understand it is surprising what gets titled as what and what engine someone will shove into a frame, but he has an XJ engine from a 650 or perhaps a 700 or 750, but not an 1100 XJ or XS. I stated I was just trying to save him from double the shipping fees when he sends the wrong engine to someone.

So now he is put off and tells me "thanks again , you should buy it and stick me with it , just to prove a point, OEM motor #'s are correct as a 1100 , they are unmolested , i'm sure yamaha made a mistake"

So I have now simply advised him what the first three VIN should be for it to be an XS1100, that I restore XS1100s and know them pretty much top to bottom. Let him know to look at Wikepedia for XS1100 and see the engine, note the differences. See if he contacts me back. I also reported the listing to EBAY as being fraudulant listing.

I guess an XS1100 engine is worth more than an XJ650.

      Wow!

I guess we shouldn't use D&M Southside MC Parts for parts when they can't even identify the items they are selling. Thats just nuts!

Marty, I thought of the 750 first, but the YAMAHA writing was on the alternator cover not the clutch cover. The only one I found with it written on the clutch cover like the listed engine was the XJ650. But there are plenty of engines and models I do not know that much about.

I see mis-listed parts all the time... sometimes it's fun to do a more 'general' seach on eBay looking for parts that aren't getting to right people because of that. I've gotten screaming deals a few times because of that...

The other good one is how many XS parts are listed as MNS bits, even when it should be obvious they're not....

Don't know what it is, but I also sent a question with about the same thing as you, but also mentioned that XS1100's have electronic tachs and that engine has a fitting for a mechanical tach. Yep, we ALL need to go on there and report it to ebay as fraudulent. This being ignorant stuff has GOT to stop. If they only way we can do it is to start slapping upside the head with the stupid stick, then we need to start slapping them upside the head with the stupid stick.

Well, the MNS parts will generally fit the XS1100 especially the Special models. And if you do not know what your looking for to see it is not a MNS part, then you got no business caring if its a MNS part really.

In this case, although the buyer SHOULD be able to also see the differences, if they do not catch them, they end with a motor that will probaly not fit into their frame. Certainly will not hook up to all the periphials as it should.

Yep, sometimes you do, and sometimes I've given the poor guy advice on how to mark the rest of his stuff so people can find it. Case in point, when I got my Vetter trunk, I got it dirt cheap cause nobody could find it. I found it on a random search for like MC trunk or something like that (I may have actually searched for a goldwing trunk which it was only be way of being mounted on an early goldwing). He had a LOT of Vetter stuff, but it was all listed as goldwing parts, cause he didn't realize they fit anything else, and frankly, the market for the Vetter stuff to put on goldwings is a lot smaller than to put on other bikes, but even if you just add vetter to the description along with goldwing, it broadens the market.

I got my XJ shocks because they were marked as XS shocks, and most I'm sure looked at them and thought "those are wrong, they won't fit" not realizing they were XJ and they could be fit to an XS. Got a pretty good deal on them. Got my front pegs from the same guys, off the same bike. But there is a difference between those who don't know what they have and don't know what it's worth and so almost give it away in relation to what it's worth, and those who mismark it and when told about it refuse to accept the fact that the part is not what they say it is.

Yep, I got the same thing. Then I saw in the link inside the message (I read the message on ebay) that he was selling the rear wheel from the bike as an XS1100 wheel, and it's a drum brake wheel. So I sent him a friendly email explaining that he may have gotten ripped off by whoever he got the bike from, as it was apparently misrepresented to him. We'll see how he responds.

I think the x was that he had removed the auction.

I like the fact that as I'm writing this post in response to yours your post count is 1234, how cool is that?

In his defense, it's not really very many non-positive feedbacks, and most of the answers actually do seem pretty reasonable. And any vendor pretty much HAS to defend himself, at least publicly these days. One might admit fault in a private email, but once a public feedback has been given, it pretty much has to be countered. Not saying your wrong BTW, just playing devils advocate here. However I'm a little bit holding judgement until I see how he responds to my question/email about the other parts from the same bike as the engine. If he doesn't do something about the rest of the parts, it's time to call him a rat, and see what we can do about shady characters like him with eBay, since at that point, he would be knowingly selling parts as something other than what they are.
