  • Question about powder coating wheels

Hi guys, I'm pretty sure I'm going to pull the trigger on getting the Eastwood powder coating set up and an old oven. There are a bunch of parts I'm going to powder coat but the ones I'm worried about are the wheels. I want the color to go all the way around the rim, not like stock. My question is when chaning tires, won't the edges get chipped up? I saw lot's of U-tube videos of guys powder coating the rims all the way around but I can't help wonder if those edges will get marred/chipped up. If so, I may go the spray bomb route and just touch up as necessary. Any thoughts on this?

Cant give you an experienced answer on powder coated rims. However, if you are careful and use a good set of pry pars with some leather patches between them and the rim, I see no reason why you cannot change a tire without marring the finish.

The problem with powder coating the rear rim is that the gear hub bolts through a set of pressed and glued in rubber bushings. You can't bake the rims with those in there and you most likely will not get the bushings out in one piece.

Powdercoat can be damaged just like any other finish, and in some ways it won't be as good as paint. But a properly-applied coating will not chip. It does mar rather easily though...

Nate is right about the wheels; you have to remove all bearings (usually destroying them), and those non-removable/replaceable rubber bushings in the rear wheel will be damaged by the cure heat, so the XS wheels are something that I wouldn't try to coat. And coating any cast aluminum parts can be very tricky, even more so than for paint.

With that said, I've had my powdercoating set-up for about 5 years now and it's one of the most-used tools I own. If you want any details, send me a PM...

powdercoating is definitely the way to go on wheels... except for the mentioned bearings and bushings on these wheels.

I'd just take your time rattle bombing it, and use a textured paint if you really want the powdercoat appearence.

I've probably mounted 1k wheels that were powdercoated, and only scratched a few

OK guys all good info especially those rim protectors. I now remember that someone here told me about those bushings. I wasn't too worried about the bearings since I plan on replacing them. Nonetheless, I think I'm going the rattle can route on the wheels. Thank you very much!
