In Georgia, all I need is an inspection by the local deputy to insure the vehicle is not stolen. With that signed affidavit, I may buy a tag. Furthermore, if I buy a car in Georgia, I leave the tag with the owner. I may drive the car home with NO tag. They don't issue "transit tags". Last I knew, this was for all vehicles, 1986 and older.

Title? I don't need no steenkin' title!

In Pennsylvania, the vehicle MUST have a title, period. If you come from PA to GA and buy my bike with no title, PA WILL NOT issue one. They don't give a care what the law says in GA. No GA title, no PA title!

Most states don't like "no title" vehicles coming from Georgia, but that's not my problem.

The form is on the Indiana bmv website. You print it and just take it with you when you do the deal have the person you buy it from fill it out and sign it, Also, if you ever dealt with bmvs you know it all depends who you get at the bmv for how smooth your transaction goes...or even what towns bmv you goto, I did my business in Rochester, IN, in and out in 10 minutes w/a title on the way.
And another thought, bmv woman said you can have a junk man sign bill of sale like if you see a bike at a salvage yard or recycling place, then you truly are RE-CYCLING ...ha ha.

So what qualifies as a "Bill of Sale". I have bought cars in Kentucky, and Indiana and always got a title. Never even seen a "Bill of Sale".

MI is the same as IN, you keep the plates, and all you need is a bill of sale...

Man, I think I am actually glad I live in Indiana. Plates are yours to keep or trash, and getting a title is as easy as; 1 a police vin check 2 bill of sale, if everything comes up clean, meaning no liens or stolen...you get a title in the mail. I did this for an 82 vision....also helped that it was no longer in the bmv system. this was about 3 years ago.

This is true of any bike you truly want to save. You really gotta transport it to the state where it's possible to run it through the process. I think that's the reason these companies are going by the wayside, instead of figuring out how to make the state laws work, and/or how to do it that actually follows the rules, they are actually subverting them. If there were truly enough lobbying about the issue, it would become possible in more states, and frankly, if one were to check the actual regulations, it may actually be legally able to be done in more states than it's possible in reality, cause we all know the rules are not always followed.

This goes back several years, in Wisconsin. i bought an '82 XS 400 at a city sale. No title, bill of sale from the auction. Repaired the bike, had to have it inspected by a certified State Patrol Inspector, not just any state patrol officer. With this inspection ($120.00) I received paperwork that allowed me to apply for a title. Another $85.00 later I had a title.

CHECK YOUR DMV for regulations / procedures for getting a title on an untitled vehicle. Here in Colorado it involves a bond, 10% has to be paid in cash, and involves no fewer than 3 separate inspections. Bike has to pass all safety and operational test. Light work, horn works, turn lights operate with the bike not running. (Got caught on that one once, had to buy a new battery.) So, it can be done, but there are paperwork hoops to jump through. Sometimes easier to find a titled frame and move everything over.

I like the idea of keeping these bikes on the road, and the title services can be an option. However, in most states, an XS member has virtually no hope of helping a fellow member, out of state, obtain a title for an untitled bike.

Having said that, I bought my XJ from a guy in Maine. No title, bill of sale only, and thats the way the state set it up. Wisconsin took the paperwork and issued me a title with no fuss at all. But that was back in '99. Check before you do anything else.

On the bright side, when I bought my first XS, in '98, the owner could not find the title. By agreement, he sent to the state for a duplicate title, got it, signed it over to me, and I was on my way. Not everyone will screw with you.

Every state is required (it's some federal requlation) to accept whatever registration or ownership documentation is provided on a vehicle by the state the vehicle is coming from. If the state only provides a registration card, then the other states MUST accept that, and the KNOW what the other states provide, so you can't fool them. Some states won't do anything for you if you don't have paper, others have a process you can go through, but they all reserve the right to change their process in the future.

Never let the plate out of your sight!

My son sold his rusty Volvo wagon to a co-worker.
- you can drive it home on my plate but take it off right after because I am going down to the SGI office in 30 minutes to cancel it -
End of story except 3 months later my son gets a $288 ticket in the mail because "his" Volvo ran a red light camera.
He went right round there with a screwdriver, took his plate off and destroyed it. Was still stuck paying the ticket, though.
A lesson learned, Never trust nobody.
