  • The field bomb is done...sort of

I was just washing my bike today and I thought I may as well take some pics. With my work and other work that as been popping up it seems polishing will have to be put on hold until winter. It has been on the road since May with no trouble other than fumbling in the rain. I grabbed it out of a field in Lancaster......when I saw it up close I almost walked away. It's a 79 special with a little 80sg and midnight mixed in. The paint is white pearl and doesn't show up very deep in the pics. It's nice but not as nice as the orange one. I had thought I'd get some red and black stripes and do it ala Daytona special......black out the motor, sand the fins, polish the cases ect. The first pics are the ones from the ad and let me tell you it looked far worse in person. 4 years in the field........It olny took about 4 hours to get it running. I still believe nothing cleans up like an xs. The second to last pic is what the motor will look like when I get to it.
The last pic is my kid because he's a ham.

Well thanks, I think I've been outdone over the last few years by everyone else. It doesn't pop yet but I hope it will with the stripes and motor done.
I think I'm going to pic up a Midnight project on Saturday. I will be a busy winter.

Garrett, the bike looks really good! I've been thinking about repainting my bike white for a while but haven't been sure how it would look.

It just gets too hot here in California and other places where I ride. The gas literally gets boiled out of the tank sometimes and the gray on silver-gray paint isn't exactly the best color scheme for a motorcycle anyway, they make camouflage BDUs in similar colors!

Hey, I picked up the next project on Saturday. A almost complete xs1100 LG. no brakes! It runs nice and has good tires but all the things that make it a midnight are messed up. All signals lights and gauges are working....really a nice find. We won't talk about the deal I got. The coils and exhaust are going on the field bomb and the restore will begin. I'm sorry it won't be a midnight when it's done at all...not even close. All the parts I would need to do that just won't happen.
So it will be the first real project I will do inside my father's xbusiness. I guess will call it Wally Wentz's Wounded Wheels now.

Thats way more complete thatn my Midnight. I don't have the airbox or the side covers and my wire harness is all cut up. But at least I have brakes

Looks like it will be a fun project.

It's missing the exhaust, mirrors, bars, seat cover, and brakes., but the killer is the air box is covered in rust on the left side and all the black chrome is pitted or missing, the gold is falling off the grab bar, the gas cap is almost silver, and the headlight ring is rusted. The gas tank and side covers and most of the rest of the bike have been spray canned. I'd have to buy another good midnight to restore this one. The good part is it runs nice and everything works. I'll redo it just not like a midnight.

I've always loved the XJ's but I've never been able to get my hands on one. I just about got one this spring but it was a little too far gone and he wanted a little too much for it. These days I won't pay more than $400 for a project. It takes alot of $ and time to redo them and I'm broke most of thr time.
I've had a maxim tank, seat and sissy bar and that's about it.

Loose paint removed. Now it's time for alot of wire brushing.

That just looks like alot fo work. But I know the feeling of seeing the 1000% improvement when your done is worth every minute.
