I drop the freaking fender, bending it and gouging the paint I just finished laying....

There goes a nights work to waste..

I had my tank all primed and handed, had my color all mixed up and in my spray gun, right as I touched the tank (it was hanging from the ceiling) the cable it was hanging by broke and it fell nose down onto the cement garage floor. I have a nice yellow spot on the wall from where my hvlp gun hit it at that moment.....

      I know the feeling!

Mine was not as destructive, but still an Ahhhhhh-Sh!t moment!! Had a few blemishes on the tank, spent hours and hours rattle can painting, sanding, painting, sanding, painting sanding, clearing, sanding, clearing.....anyway, finally got it looking nice. Then I found the tank needed more cleaning. Spilled a touch of acetone on the tank, along with a little fuel. Well, all of my work peeled like an orange!!! The existing older paint stood up fine!! That was when I bought the two part paint and a spray gun!

          Hi Dave,
um, the morning-after shakes from overGuinessing work great if you are going to be stick welding, perhaps it'd also work for painting?
From your description, way too much masking and sanding = way too much work.
3 coats primer + 3 coats finish straight out the gun is all that's needed.
I'ts a bike fer Chrissake not a piece of jewelry, looking good from a yard away is good enough.

No, I ignored the fender this morning. thought it best to pretend I didn't do anything yesterday.

It wasn't too much masking or sanding. I sanded down the fender and laid the primer and and base. Sanded again and laid the top coats. Maybe two hours total time in it.

I'm not as mad this morning, more humored by it. And natemoen, it took all I had not to add another special mark in the wall... My last cell phone had the blow torch turned on it for a special occasion in the garage...

Temper this advice with the fact that Fred's bike is pumpkin orange because that's the cheapest color they had.
