  • My SG is DONE....

Got 'er done today.... Next stop for it is Craigslist (but that won't stop me from riding it...)....

    Here's what I started with...

Definitely a bit rough... rear brake had been jammed (and melted!), exhaust rotted out/broken, dented (but unrusty) tank, and the carbs, etc were in a box. The bike was mostly complete except for the headlight, grab bar, and rear brake pedal (who needs a pedal with a melted brake..)...

I stripped the bike to the bare frame... build details here:

    http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32759

The new color is Jalapeno Red, but my camera insisted on showing it as orange (?); I tried 'adjusting' the color via photoshop, but it's not quite right as shown. It's very close to a Fire Engine Red; it's red.....

I ended up replacing the motor (with a better SG unit), front forks, all the brakes except for the master cylinders, exhaust, and seat. I got everything except the exhaust (eBay), seat/grabrail/headlight off my parts bikes, those I got from Cowboy Bob (thanks!), although there's some new bits too (bars, grips, turns). Everything painted got repainted (I powdercoated all the smaller parts like the brakes, controls, battery tray, etc), all the aluminum repolished. I'm very happy with how it turned out, on to the next one...

Phil, it starts at the first push of the starter button, and runs/shifts cleanly; I couldn't be more pleased. Doesn't have quite the poop as what I remember my '78 as having, but scoots very well...

I 'played' with the forks a bit; they're '81H units, but I substituted '79F springs and upped the fork oil amount from 241 cc to 250. This firmed up the forks and eliminated the need for air in them (while still leaving the ability to add air if wanted). It seemed to help, as the front is planted a bit better than what I remember on the '78. All in all, handling is very good (but still not quite as nimble as my '93 Sporty).

Main thing I noticed? How much more engine heat you feel with the wide inline compared to the V-twin. Of course, it was a warm day...

Wow, that is sharp! Before and after pictures like that could get a guy in trouble. It's going to make every parts bike and junker look a little more tempting.

                            Sold!!

I've had the bike on CL pretty much ever since it was done, but with only a few calls. I got a looker today, and the guy came and looked at it and I could tell he wanted it. Came back later with SWMBO, she put her seal of approval on it ('It's pretty!'), so it's off to a new owner as soon as he accesses his cash on Monday. It's not going to be his 'primary' bike, but his 'vintage' ride, so it will have a pampered existence. Just the sort of buyer I was looking for....

Oh yeah.... $2100 cash.... Money for my next XS project....

I just picked up a "Windkutter" fairing like that one the other day in a deal I made.

It looks like new. Are they any good?

Sorry, on closer inspection I can see it's a vindicator. My bad.

Anyone heard of a WindKutter though?
