  • xs1100 spark plug wires

    Hey all,

I have been working on this 79 xs1100 for about a year now. I am down to just a few things until she is ready to ride! One thing I am having problems with is the coils. I am repairing the coils by putting in new wires. My problem is that the instruction I got calls for solid core wires. I have searched every auto shop in town and everyone tells me they do not carry them and in fect the solid core wires are illegal to use due to rfc interference created by the use of them. Any idea where I might get them or
are the standard carbon wires usable for this project?

    Thanks

    Dan

Just ask for a universal high-performance solid core wire kit from Accel or Taylor Cable. If they don't act like they can handle that then you need to look for a better parts store anyway! (spent a LONG time in that business) Myself I think I'd still go with a good bike shop so I could get the correct spark plug ends.

Dennis Kirk also sells the solid core wire for motorcycles. Actually we use it here at work for large furnace ignition. They have a regular transformer (coil) and spark plug ignition system. We have reels of the stuff! But as they say and high performance shop or even autozone, Advance Auto can order them.

Thanks for the feedback on the wires. I'll make some calls in the morning. I did by the way, check with AutoZone, Advanced Auto, Oreilly's and NAPA. The Guys at Advanced Auto said he had been there for five years and never heard anyone ask him for solid core wires. I'll check some pro shops. Hopefully I'll get to hear the old girl fire up for the first time in about a year. I did a complete rebuild from front to back. She should run real good.

            Thanks again for the responses.

They are not 'SOLID CORE' wires they are 'Copper CORE' or 'METAL CORE' they will be stranded wires not solid. Maybe that's what they thought you meant.

                wires

Thanks SixtySix. You are probably correct. I did find the wires at a Oreilly's in Overland Park, KS. He knew exactly what I was looking for because he had experience with older bikes. Anyway, all you help is greatly appreciated.

Since I also am searching for replacement plug wires for my bike I will let the folks here know what I found. The lowest priced, stranded wire plugwires comes in a kit,7mm,made for a gas farm tractor and cost a little over $15 not counting tax .I found this at a auto parts place not far from where I live.Other kits cost more, but what`s the point. So far have found quite a few things that will work.{making a list of things I`am going do to my bike when it warms up}When its cold just go to a shop drink their coffee and ask questions might find out alot of interesting things
