Would like to contact a member who knows the history of the xs11. I just purchased a 1980 xs1100 and would like to find out what all the letters following the the model number means. Are there many versions of the same bike? What is a xs11 compared to a xs1100.

Been riding for 40 yrs and want to get back on the road one more time. I am also a ham radio op. and have noticed a few ham call letters in the postings to various foums. My call is kw4a for those interested.

Anyhow would like to hear from those who may wish to educate me on this motorcycle. I prefer contact by phone as this is too much to type. Ha!

I have unlimited calling so if you wish, send me your number and I will call you. No problem!

The letters after the year just refer to the model. a 1978 xs11 (or 1100 doesnt matter) is designated "E", a 1979 is designated "F" and so on until the end of production in '81. Also starting in 1979 they introduced the special model. the Specials get a "S" in front of the year designator letter so a 1979 special would be "SF". Then starting in '80 they also added a third model called the Midnight Special (MNS for short) this model had the designator letter "L" so a 1980 MNS was a "LG".

Here is a link to the serial number model check page that will kind of go through it as well.
