Yep my 81 special came with the 85mph speedo but I swapped it for a 160mph about 4 yrs, ago and I reset the mileage to the correct miles on the bike.

How to re set odometer mileage

"Yep my 81 special came with the 85mph speedo but I swapped it for a 160mph about 4 yrs, ago and I reset the mileage to the correct miles on the bike. "

How do you do that? I'd like to take about 32,000 off of my salvaged speedo to more closely reflect the real mileage.

Old bikers never die, they're just out of sight!

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"
        I've been riding since 1959.

Well it takes a lot of patients. I just carefully and very carefully used a pick and went around the black ring ( I think it's called a bezel ) that holds the glass on. Just a small amount at a time around and around being sure not to create any bend marks on the ring. All you need to do is expand the ring just enough to get it to slip off. Once that's done remove the glass and you'll be able to remove the face. However, when I did this the needle came off and it took a little work to get the needle back correctly so it reads the correct speed. What I would do now is put my finger on the needle to hold it in place and just tip the face enough to use a pick to turn the numbers on the inside. Then just put the glass and bezel back on. I used a flat screwdriver covered with a cloth and went around and around and pressed the ring back on nice and tight. It worked very well. I've been caught in some very heavy rains and there is no leaking yet. Like I say patients, patients and light pressure. Good Luck.

I was hoping there was an easy answer. I am not patient!

Dunno, never tried it, but I remember my dad doing it with a twist drill once on an Austin 7 years ago.

I love it when people make assumptions about me (and my endowment or lack of!) when I ride my motorbike. I think it's great that Harley dudes can hate on me when I'm riding an XS. And as soon as I get home and swap bikes, someone else (maybe even someone from this forum) can dis me for sitting my skinny ass on a HD. Like it says in that Kris Kristofferson song, "Everybody needs someone to look down on."

My daily rides are the '79 XS and a '76 Shovelhead. They both require routine maintenance, have both been ridden a passel of miles, and neither has let me down yet. At least nothing I couldn't fix well enough to get me home.

I dig motorsickles and I don't care what you are riding, you will get a certain level of respect from me just because you are out there and doing it. I'll wave at ya if yer on a freakishly neon lit, chromed-out bagger Harley with ridiculous apehangers or a Vespa.

Let's all go ride our motorcycles!
