    Ohhh an Eleven Special

Now I know I’m supposed to obey all the rules of the road and the speed limits. At my age I should be responsible and experienced enough to just say no. But that just ain’t the case. ( Sorry mom) Last night my wife and I were on our way back home from St. Cloud, Mn. I had taken a flight on a WWII B-17 Bomber so I was a little jazzed up from that.
Really cool way to spend the day. Anyway we were riding along minding our own business when this guy on a very nice Harley came up along side and made it clear he wanted to beat up on a poor little rice grinder. He was smiling and being friendly about it. At the next light we ended up in our own lanes at the front of traffic so what was I to do. The light turned green and he took off and I could tell right away this Harley had a little more to it than I expected. Thinking I’d better catch up I opened up my little grinder
and really had to work to catch up until 3rd gear by then we were passing him and into 4th and 5th he stayed respectfully close. Each time I’d heard him open it up I’d just screw on the throttle again and keep him back there. Now fortunately that stretch of road is fairly
straight and has about 10 miles between lights cause my speedo was comfortably over 100mph . So the next light was red so I pulled up and stopped over to the left in my lane so he could pull up next to us. He pulled up and looked at my side cover
and got a big smile on his face and said with a nod “ Ohhh an Eleven Special, that was my brothers first new bike”. The light changed and we road together for about a mile until we had to turn off . It was fun for all of us. I’d like to think that for awhile during the race he was thinking why is this little bike with two people on it in front of me. I think that him saying Ohhh and Eleven Special is about the best compliment I’ve heard about my bike.

      Ain't it COOL!!!!!!!!!!!????????

I did kinda the same thing coming home after wiping out a main bearing in mine. My bike was hammerin' but some smilin' Hardley rider still wanted to try. Flew by him with a LOUD knock goin' on but I just couldn't resist.

          Overpriced Harleys

i dont quite get why many guys think a Harley is the sh.t. the only answer i can come up with is the V-Twin vibration and straight pipe loudness does somethin for their ego and have a pocket of cash to blow. i know their torquey, but i cant stand the noise. theres a few in my hood, and i see and hear all of em blastin out the windows on the take off out of the driveway. they must have small di..ks! i have a Kerker on my XS11 and a Two Brothers on my CBR1000F. they give me a rush when i open them up, but are quiet when just cruisin.

While Harley has done an excellent job of marketing their 'lifestyle' as a brand and most Harley riders you'll run into are of the 'me too' variety, there are good reasons to own one. Yes, they cost more money up front than their equivilent metric clones, but the unknown (to most people) factor is the cost of parts. I did a 'price check' recently and compared the cost of replacing a laced front wheel on a Yamaha 1100 V-star vs Harley. Same year (2003), same part, similar models. The HD wheel came in at a 1/3 less at list price, and if bought from one of the HD dealers that offers online discounts this jumps to nearly 50% less. And the Yamaha wheel wasn't available assembled; you could only get it as parts, so are looking at another $100 to have it laced/trued. Add in the fact that finding parts for a HD product, almost no matter how old it is, can be as simple as looking though a few catalogs and making a phone call, well, you get the idea...

I'm not advocating that everyone rush out and buy a Harley; buy what pleases you. I own both, and each bike has it's good/bad points. My favorite for 'everyday' riding is my '93 Sportster, as I like it's nimble handling, lighter weight, much better fuel mileage, and that 'torque' (my motor's been hopped up, so I'm not suffering a power loss..). But for extended high-speed touring, the XS is a better choice and that smooth, turbine-like power curve isn't too bad either...

Most riders only debate the merits of their bikes based on initial cost/performance. But cost of ownership enters into it also. As a XS owner, I can only wish that parts for it were as cheap and easy to find as Harley parts. And that's a big reason metric bikes depreciate so badly...

Yea,there's plenty of old Hd's running around. When you see a large group of em there's probably a shovel in there. The thing is, most people can't tell em apart at a glance. They have definitely maintained their "heritage" look.
                  I just sold my 58 last summer & most non-HD people couldn't believe it wasn't a 90, 95, 2000, ?. Even with the kicker sitting there.

Heh heh.......I work about a block and a half from one of the largest Harley dealers in OK and I don't see many at all. The ones I do see are usually pretty cool though.

BTW........why is it Harley people seem to have the have the need to meet every saturday at the Harley dealer?

I have a Yamaha and I don't feel the need to go to the Yamaha dealers every saturday, same with my Chevy.

A wise guy, I mean Wise Man, once said: the level of a biker's testosterone is inversely proporti0nal to the size of the back tire on his bike. The same I suppose, could be said for the volume of his bike's exhaust.

PS My bike has spaghetti pipes with turnouts. I love the sound it makes, especially in tunnels and when I'm riding by those concrete highway dividers. The sound bouncing back from them reminds me of the exhaust note of the WW2 Allison V12 powered Spitfires that I heard at the last Fly In in Half Moon Bay. It still gives me a big sh#t faced grin!
Old bikers never die, they're just out of sight!

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"
                            I've been riding since 1959.
