+1 to Yahman. "I voted that I use the drop down menus, but I actually use both equally. There was no option for that vote."

I am mechanically inclined but I had no experience working on 28 and 29 year old motorcycles.

I have read all of the Tech Tips.
The carburetor tips enabled me to successfully, do a compete disassemble, clean, rebuild, bench sync and Colortune the carbs on my bike. With out all the information I learned from the tips I would not even attempted it, never mind getting it done correctly.

The information I read daily in the Forums have broadened my mechanical abilities. I have rebuilt brake calipers, installed a Venture CCT, changed all the fluids, and changed out exhaust systems and I have the knowledge To do much more (final drive swap).

Thanks to all you contributors, David

I use the tech tips from the drop-down menu for set-in-stone single answer questions, and also the search feature in the forums to get more than one opinion. Sometimes an issue can have more than one possible solution, so I "search" and find what fixed the problem for mutiple people.

I have copied every tech tip about the XS1100 from the forum here and elsewhere into MS word docs and saved them on my computer for reference.

I use both, however, something I would like to see added is a list of OEM parts that members have found alternatives for, and where to get them. For instance, someone a while back found a suitable replacement for the driveshaft U Joint, and somewhere theres a thread on possible replacement rings from Hastings mfg.
1980 SG. (Sold - waiting on replacement)
2000 XJR1300. The Real modern XS11. Others are just pretenders.

Biblical File Storage: "Seek and Ye shall find."

                Tech Forum Exclusively for me.

For the record here I'll state that I actually read TC's "Sticky" note about "read this First before posting" and did read/familiarize myself with the knowledge already condensed/refined down there in the Tech tips. That was and still is an excellent starting point IMO.

In practice however, there's just SO much that's been Posted by members throughout the years and that makes "searching" for info prone to data-overload. Separating the "gems from the rocks" by looking back at the archived pages is a favorite pastime of mine.

My strategy is to choose a member who "contributes" in a manner I find appealing/useful and read their posts from way back. (TC, Prom, 3Phase, etc.) Then I cache some of the useable material on my own computer by saving it in the form of Pdf files. I can then review the material or print the material out.

Like 79XS11F, I'm a little distrustful of "cloud" storage and therefore choose to keep what I do find in a place where I know I can get at it when I need it. With internet "link rot" and members own web pages or photo accounts being on/off again my "caching" has proven effective for me.

I look forward to seeing what improvements are made in the tech tips and would like to be notified when the "upgrade versions" are ready for browsing.

I use the drop-down menus... coz they look cool.

I would get used to forum only, since it would be easier to maintain/add content, but then again, how about just leaving the tech tips in the drop-down menu, which would just forward you to the appropriate forum category? Individual tech tips would not be in the drop down menu.
