Need Information on the wireing and gauges

I Bought this xs11 bike out of a nasty feud. The wire harness was burnt, and the gauges were hit with a machette. Even though the gauges need to be changed, when it comes to the wireing what would be the best way to fix, would it be a good idea to cut all the way back and replace with more color coated wire, or should i replace the whole harness?

thats one hell of a nasty feud,

depends how bad the wiring harness is damaged,
if its only a cpl of wires it wouldnt be to hard to repair,
if its a lot more, then another harness would probably be ur best bet.

what model have u got?
any pics of the bike?

Wiring harness can be sourced cheap on eBay, or from Andreas. If the wiring is hacked, that's the way I'd go.

Tell us what year and model XS11 it is. I have some parts including a wiring harness for an 81 Special. Unfortunately, the wiring harness is one of the more model and year specific items it seems. I would think the harness form an 81 and an 80 special would be fairly interchangable, but never really compared them. Gages are pretty interchangable. Specials have round gages, Standards square. And the 78-79 models have 160 MPH speedo while the later model only go to 85.

my bike is a 1980 xs1100 i believe its an sg it has round gauges, cant send pics at this time, but can later. The wireing harness was burnt from behind the headlight, in 5 diffrent places back underneath the seat, i attemptedto cut the whole wire loom and replace with more color coated wire, but if you have another harness, how much?

that bike must have come from the rough end of town?
Feuds round our way involve pouting and door slamming.
OK then, the US model SG has an 85mph speedo but earlier models went higher.
XS650 (120mph) XS750/850 (140 mph) & XS11 (160mph) will all work on your SG.
Alas, unlike the speedos, the XS11 tach (any year) is the only one that'll work; it's electrical and all the others are mechanical.
You could re-wire from scratch but that's a real chore; it's easier to replace the harness.

You also need a Clymer's manual. A paper one is easier to use but you'll need to buy it.

Mine is an 81 SH and yours most likely is an SG. I know the SG had the ballast resistor that the SH did not, but if you simply change to 3 ohm coils, you eliminate the ballast resistor anyway.

Now that I think about it, the SH uses the 4RO TCI and the 80 uses the 2H7 TCI, which I belive may have different connectors. So to be honest, it may not be all that interchangable. Any one else know for certain the differences?

Andreas should have a decent harness for an SG I would think though.
