  • anybody else like riding at night?

I do. I just got home after work and I always like rolling down the hiway in the wee hours. Almost no cars and you can see their lights

I'd say about 70 % of all my years of riding have been at night. Its good except for the occasional deer...

      Coyotes aren't much fun either.

I do like riding at night though.

I enjoy riding/driving at night, for the same reasons you mentioned. Seeing the lights from vehicles coming from the sides makes it much easier to react. However, the presence of wildlife does pose a problem in some locales. Actually, when I'm in the cage, I prefer driving at night, in the rain. The water makes it easier for me to see the lines on the road, as they seem to lift up off the pavement like little islands. Of course, a deluge is a bit much, and negates this effect, but a light, steady rain is nice.

I ride at night only when necessary. Most motorcycle accidents in my area happen at night time. There are just too many lights on around here where a motorcycle headlight sure won't stand out from all the other lights. Not to mention older people with not-so-good vision, illegals with no licence who won't stop if involved in an accident, all night partiers, speeders, etc, you get the picture.

                Hi Garth,
no, not these days. It's said that a 60 year old needs 4x the light to see as well as a 20 year old and I'm way past 60.
So I only ride after dark if I absolutely have to. Like leaving a rally after midnight. You'd be amazed how long it takes to ride 10 miles on an unlit country road at 15mph.

                  Too many critters

Not around here, too much wildlife of all sorts from deer, racoons, porcupines, groundhogs etc etc. I had to evade a Canada Goose last week a few times that was nesting on the side of a road beside a swamp that wouldn't get off the road at all- Dan

                    Depends

Where I am, freeways aren't bad, backroads with no lighting is OK here in SoCal, but places like NY state is no good. Deer have overrun the country and they keep the body shops there very very busy.

Yahman I couldn't agree with you more...I hit one on the dragon - the zuki, my first week of riding after storing my bike for one month of not riding...and planedick you are so right too...SoCal isn't bad riding at night other than the coyote's which i've already hit this year, but i do like to ride at night here...and NY riding at night is an adventure!...ie. if your doing it, your watching rediculously not for other vehicles but for animals...

Garth, riding at night is nice and cool and comfortable but your begging for trouble.

Small animals that ONLY come out at night don't feel so small when you encounter them with the front wheel of a motorcycle. Large animals that only come out at night............well ...........

Then there are the idiot drivers who don't recognise a single headlight as a motorcycle, let alone another vehicle.

I absolutely HATE riding at night, even more so as I've gotten older and my night vision isn't what it used to be, because I have experienced these things.

If you must ride at night be very cautious and aware of all that is around you.

                        IMHO

I agree about all the hazards of riding at night. Here in Mn. we've got the critters and the older people ( I'm getting to be one of them ) the intoxicated and the inattentive. However, riding at night just has a sparkle to it that is appealing. I like it when you hit a low point in the road and the temp changes about 10 degrees just for a second. I wear my helmet and kinda do the speed limit but, sometimes it's worth risk.

Love it! ...................But one has to take precautions with all the wildlife around the place. Traffic isn't a problem out here but the hoppy, jumpy, runny, furry things keep you on your toes.

A 50 watt HID in the 8" headlight and twin 35watt 6" driving lights, plus about the loudest horns one can fit on a bike to try to scare off the critters that persist in trying to bring you down.

But doesn't the bike run sweet in the cool night air!

Oh, yeah. Let's not forget the feathered varieties like frogmouths and owls that try to snatch the bugs and moths from the glare of your headlights. I haven't hit either yet but have had a number of near misses.

                              Night ride

I should know better, 'cause I am aware of the dangers, especially from critters, not to mention the plethora of bugs that are out. However, there is some special feeling I get riding at night. The air is denser, the smells that assault your senses are more intense, just you with the glow of the instruments travelling in your own cocoon of light. I really feel disconnected from the rest of the world riding at night.
