  • Gearheads gotta see this revoutionary engine

I heard about this on a local talk show. Imagine an engine about the size and weight of a Harley engine that puts out hundreds of horsepower and has so much torque and winds so high that it doesn't need a tranny. He has apparently sold the manufacturing rights to a company that is going to use a smaller version to power an electric generator. He says he has already heard from gear heads who are going to buy the whole unit just for the engine to mount on/in... whatever!

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"
    I've been riding since 1959.

    Wow

I bet I could fit that into most anything you can imagine. Cars, motorcycles, airplanes, boats, etc.... Could run it on used cooking oil...

Very interesting design, there must be some limitations they are still working on though... I didn't see and hp/torque curves, would be nice if to see them. Maybe it has no low end torque.

            I think the reason

the reason it has such a high weight/hp ratio is small number of moving and reciprocating parts. That energy that is lost in a conventional engine is now available for use.

I think this is a huge leap forward. Give it 5 years.

                    Yes

Spend some time at the website, poke around, there are lots of pics, specs, and demos' etc.

This guy better be carefull, the car companies and oil companies are going to do all they can to see this guy and his engine dissappear.

Ok I think I get it

other the the gearing exactly, but I am just equating that to say a very sophisticated ratchet. The real question that comes to my mind is:
how is that thing both sealed and low friction on the planes between the surface that connect the pistons to their hub and the other of the same or the wall that forms the toroidal "cylinder" further out from the hub. the drawings show what appears to be a lot of surface area in apparent contact with moving parts that would cause friction or allow leaks from chamber to chamber. but then again my specialty is photovoltaics and we aint got no moving parts (wait we do use switch gear), so what do I know?

There is another site to check out Paul Pantone has invented miniature fuel refinery that can be installed on an internal combustion engine that will turn any liquid hydro carbon into a vapor that will run the engine: the ultimate "flex fuel" engine. You can get plans for a model that a competent tinkerer can build with material and hardware available in any hardware store. This is a small version that will operate a small engine such an electric generator. I saw it working. It was the damnedest thing: dump just about anything into the fuel tank (kerosine, used crankcase oil, even Mountain Dew,) and the engine would just putt right along. AND the emission is cleaner that a car engine with all the environmental crap!

Check out the video of "air motoring" his engine. I'm pretty sure that at about the 1:30 mark you can see a mouse come out of the motor and then run down towards the center and finally jump away.

I love this thing... in the press release, he was talking about a 1'' unit... I work with alot of big engines (CAT 3600 series ((about 10'' wide cylinders))) with 8/12/16 cylinders, and our 3612 engine puts out only double the horse power as that thing, and each cylinder/rod assembally weighs more then the 14'' unit... and there are 12 of them...and.. I'm having a meltdown over this thing... If it works, I want one...

The biggest limitation I can see is the metal strength with the gears and mostly the crank... We have like an 8'' crank coming off the end of our big units, and I've seen them fail due to the incredible load. I think these might have to be dumbed back until someone finds a new metal that is rediculously strong, and there goes his big dream of keeping it affordable.

Or he would have to turn it down to 4 fins instead of 8, making it do 4 power cycles per revolution instead of 8 with only one spark plug so that the 4 cycles hapen in one revolution instead of every half revolution...

Either way, this will be interesting!
There are only two types of bikers...
those that have layed it down, and
those that have not layed it down...YET!

You have to think though, that 8" crank has to stop and restart that massive piston over and over again, but this engine just spins in a circle. WAY less load and force on it.
