has anyone done the conversion from a standard set of wheels to a maxim set.i've encountered disc to disc mount interference

Lots of folks have converted from the 17" to the 16" wheel. Maxim or Special it is the same. You basically need to pull out everything between the swingarm and the final drive from both setups and swap it all as one unit. This includes the spacers, and the brake mounting bracket (the one that extends up front with a mounting point further up the swingarm). The caliper mount itself should be the same, so that could stay.
Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.

When swapping for the 16" from the 17", you need to change to the 'Special' wheel spacer and brake caliper bracket. This relocates the brake caliper out further. The original outer spacer (between the caliper mount and the swingarm) is no longer used.

For some reason, Yamaha machined the 16" wheel center hub different and the brake rotor is .300" further from centerline...

Here's a pic to make it clearer...

        [IMG][/IMG]

On the left is the bracket and spacer you need, on the right the ones you have. The far right spacer won't be used. Hard to see (sorry for the fuzzy pic), but the inner spacer on the left is .300" thicker.

Hey Steve, was that an Oxymoron, or just Fuzzy Logic?

BTW, IF he couldn't obtain the Special's spacer, could he use the standards spacer, and then add another .300" worth of spacer to maintain the centerline? And would the brake caliper bracket still work or would it require some modification/bending to fit?

No reason you couldn't add the .300" with another spacer/washers/etc, but the caliper bracket would be tough to reshape. The standard bracket has a fairly sharp offset in it that would need to be mostly removed, and that would make it 'longer' (between the axle and the anchor pin). Not easy to reshape, as that's what I did on my Harley rear 4-piston conversion (also with a 16" wheel). I've got 4-5 hours of work into that bracket getting it to fit (along with other mods for the new caliper), it would be much, much easier to get the right bracket for the stock brake.

Steve, why would the bracket have to be reshaped as you're only moving it in slightly and would then retain its correct mounting offset ratio to the caliper on the original wheel?

Because after moving the caliper out .300", there's not enough room between the caliper mount and the swingarm for the unmodified bracket; the swingarm isn't wide enough. Some guys have made this bracket fit by bending it and the swingarm (in not always the right places), but they're also the guys that have to beat their rear axle in because of the misalignment...
