  • Young rider with a new bike (new guy thread)

alright Apparently my last topic didnt go through so lets try this again.

My name is Matthew and I am from Tennessee and have recently purchased my third bike (first was a fix-er-up VN750 and the second was a V45 magna which I just sold), a XS1100SG that has been bobbed and chopped and bubba-ed into a low riding hard tail. currently I am working on getting he road ready (first trip landed me my first speeding ticked due to a busted speed-o) so I can altenate between my VN and the XS as daily drivers; I would rather ride in the rain then drive in the sun, but I have run into some issues that this Forum has helped me fix but there are still more to go.

Currently I am chasing down a issue with the drive train where once I gun it on the street the engine increases RPMs but the bike barely accelerates.

Welcome aboard! Yep, clutch is slipping. Relatively common issue. You can take the right side engine cover off with the bike on the sidestand without draining the oil. The clutch is right behind that cover. Of course, it may just be that the clutch needs to be adjusted properly. The round cover on the right engine cover (held on with 2 phillips screws) is where you will find the adjustment point. See the manual for specific instructions.

Ahha! I adjusted it out on the handle bars along with greasing up the lines and 99.9% of the slippage is gone. now to fix this speed-o to get out of that ticket

That handlebar adjustment is only a cable slack adjustment and doesn't actually adjust the clutch itself. Download the manuals from Catatonicbug's website in the link in his post and follow the steps to adjust the clutch starting at the bottom and it's likely that it will solve 100% of the clutch slippage, if you don't it will likely really end up slipping and then need to be replaced, where if you adjust it it will last for a while longer. It's pretty easy to do if you follow the instructions step by step.

Welcome to the forum! Clutch slip is a general problem with these bikes, there are a few different fixes for it though. Do a general search on it and it will bring up all kinds of things. As previously stated, start with a proper clutch adjustment before throwing parts at it. If that doesnt kill it then you should consider gettin new HD clutch springs. Springs alone have been enough to fix the problem. You can get new friction plated from parts-n-more for about $40 but, most of the people have found their OEM ones to be within spec and a light sanding to the steels combined with new frictions solve the problem... If you want to get fancy look up the ALTO Mod...
            Enjoy!

Alright I got 100% of the slip fixed via a proper adjustment and I must say this bike is way meaner than my VN750 and beats my V45 on the top end. I must admit I got mildly aroused when I nailed the throttle in fourth gear

Alright my speedo just ate my new cable . But anyways I found a old Craigslist ad of what my bike looked like before bubba and ellrod cut her up. I am always up for a custom but she used to be so pretty....ahh well it saved me $800

Look for a speedo from another Yamaha to replace yours. The 650 will work, as will the 750. The SG had an 85MPH speedo, so even a 650 speedo will give you a 125 top end reading.
For the cable, just pick up the inside from the local parts store. the housing doesn't break, much.

Remember, the tachs on these are ELECTRIC, NOT MECHANICAL! Not all tachs interchange. A new electronic should work, as long as it can be set for 2 cyl. Remember, these use a wasted spark system, so the coils fire once per rev, NOT every other rev.
