I don't know, we have oil too. Maybe we don't have enough for a long time, but if we pulled out of the opec areas and stopped buying selling anything to/from them how long would they last I wonder? Doesn't matter I guess, those in power will never do it, so it's not like we will ever find out.

        speculators

It's not the oil producers driving up the prices. It's the stock brokers and speculators who buy up vast quantiies and hold it until the prices climb.

If we were to pull out from buying from those companies in the mid-east that would make for some issues in the mid-east as far as their income is concerned...but would that really be all that bad?...If we pulled out and immediately after pulling out laid it out there for them to do negotiations to decide whether we are going back to them or not...and of course keep the negotiation brief...ie. tell them Here is what we will do...do you accept or not?...after they do not accept we use our oil and keep the price low and then re-negotiate with them to buy theirs for 10cents a gallon over what we are using it at, they would feel they are doing better than us and take the deal...then when we have the contract signed we have a clause in there put in place where they cannot raise their price more than 50 cents per gallon over the next 20 years and no more than another 50 cents the 10 years following the initial 20 we could force our oil fuel prices to be a lot lower, while boosting our own economies by bringing in income for our oil as well as keeping more money in the rest of Americas pockets...I think...but what do i know...I'm not a ecomaniac...:P

Soon China will be the top consumer of oil and it isn't going to matter what we think or do here in this part of the world. We will just have to live with it.

Exxon makes aprox 3-4 cents per gallon of gas.The US GOV makes approx 52 cents per gallon.I don,t know what the Canadian GOV makes but I'm sure it's more per gallon than the privet companies. If the US would start drilling the price of crude oil would drop by 30-50 % tomorrow.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

The editorial cartoon in Thursday's Saskatoon Star-Phoenix says it all.
                    Two panels.
Left side is tagged "Gas prices rise" and shows an orbiting rocket at lift-off.
Right side is tagged "Gas prices fall" and shows Forrest Gump's feather floating down in the air.
