Been trying to follow the the nuclear catastropy but it seems to have slipped from the media interest. Hardly warrants any mention at all here. Yet, the melt down continues unabated, and the radiation plume grows in the sea and cloud extends around the globe. Reuters said this could go on indefinately as the crisis is not fully understood and conditions remain fluid. I wonder how long it will take before our food, much like Japans is unfit to eat? Spend your life protecting your kids but how do you protect them from something like this.

I think there is both truth and exaggeration to what Reuters says. There is a lot of sensitive equipment along the pacific rim monitoring for this stuff, and so far, while they have knowledge that the winds have gotten here, they haven't gotten a blip on the monitoring devices. As for the food, it depends on where it comes from. I'd be worried about pacific seafood frankly. And don't plan on having any sushi any time soon, even if the fish was safe (and I'm not even going there) that industry was destroyed in the tsunami, the boats are in many cases miles inland, and in some cases they don't even know where the fishermen are yet.

Yes, this is a much larger problem than I think they are letting on, and ALL because not enough thought was given to how they were going to insure power long term in this type of situation (the reactors and cooling systems survived everything fine, the generators and power distribution systems did not).

      venting

Just needed to vent I guess, I won't discuss it in front of my family. You just don't know who's version to trust. I go on the nuclear site and they say one thing, reuters says something different, EPA has there own version and the coalition for nuclear responsibility is nothing but doom and gloom. What bothers me most is that the various authorities in Japan have different numbers as well. Read today that milk from cows in someplace in US already has detectable levels, small but still detectable. It's only been 3 weeks since this all started .

Now, see, some of those type of things I just see how that could be. Just to make it through the chain after getting all the way to here and all, just doesn't make sense. Especially when what's probably the case is what was reported was that there were measurable levels or radiation in the milk, but what was probably not reported was there there are probably measurable but small levels normally. Unless they report it against a yardstick of what is normal, you don't know what they are reporting means. I won't say I ignore it if they don't say anything about what normal is, but I often try to find that out if I can.

          Milk

It seems odd that there is radiation in milk. This time of the year it would seem that most milk cows would be on feed, and not open grazing. Where are the reports of contaminated milk coming from. Also, it takes time for radiation to work its way through the animal. Maybe what they have dicovered is natural or from the Russian accident. I wouldn't panic about this.

That 'someplace' is near Spokane Washington. A semi-big deal on the news here locally, but the levels are merely enough to detect, not enough to be harmful.... or so they say. I'm not going to quit milk over it.

I saw this thread last night, then went home and saw a news blurb about the fact that radiation has been detected in Springfield, MO. I have no idea what that means for food supplies or cattle, but that is major farmland out there...

Any nuke plants down that way, i got a fealing that this is going to open up a whole new can of worms for the EPA, and we are going to hear about hazards that have been there longer than wwe want to know about not even related to Japan.
