    Ever happen to you????

Went out for a ride yesterday and got to a four way stop. It was my turn to go (turn right) and the rummy on my left decided to go instead of giving me the right of way. In order not to get hit, I gave the XS 1100 a little gas and put a fair distance between us. This jerk decided to speed up and get about 2 ft. from my rear tire. The road was windey so I tried to get ahead but he stayed right with me. I was getting very angry, but decided the best thing to do was pull over and let him pass. Unfortunatly, he pulled over and three good sized guys got out and started walking toward me. So........I took off, they got in thier car and started chasing me again. If I slowed down they stayed on my rear...if I sped up....same thing.

After about two miles I came to a gaming casino where a buch of Harleys were pulling in. I joined them and the guy behind me decided they might be my friends and took off. Needless to say, it sorta ruined my ride.

A friend of mine carries a flair gun (which is legal here to carry) for just such occasions. Says it will deter crazy people from messing with guys on a bike. One more scenario like that, and I might consider it.

What a bummer of a ride. I think you did the best thing to get where there is alot of people. You can't take any chances now a days.

I have never had it happen to me when I have been on my bike, but I have had it happen a couple of times when I was in my car. When I was younger, I usually had a tire iron handy, which seems to make most idiots think twice about getting stupid. But now-I feel it is best to ignore them and try to get some where safe. It is just not worth it and people are just crazy.

It's a shame that there are freaks like that out on the road. At least you were able to avoid a closer confrontation. Sometimes Harley rider's bad reputation can come in handy! I had someone follow me like that once but eventually I was able to lose them.

I agree, you did the right thing.

As far as the flair gun thing, I'd be careful with that idea.

We had some kids locally carrying a BB gun get an assault charge against them when they brandished it at a group of people. The gun wasn't loaded, which didn't matter.

They were lucky not to get shot by the police when they were arrested as the gun looked like a army Colt 45. The police arrested the kids with their weapons drawn down on them.

If you want to carry a weapon get the proper permit(s) for it and learn to use it correctly.

I always carry when I'm traveling. And I have the training and permits to do so.

        Ride safe.

            Carrying

I have to agree with Bob, I carry as well on long trips it just makes me feel safer.

I had a similar thing happen over last weekend. Crazy people. Why cant they just leave us alone we aren't hurting anyone......

BOb's comment about proper training and permits is so very true.

In Virginia you can get 5 years for doing almost anything illegal with a gun. This includes carrying concealed with a permit.

Crazy Laws. They are made for honest people crimals dont care.

              Mitch,

I don't carry a weapon with me all the time. I still feel pretty safe here in Syracuse, Utah. And I have gone out for a midnight walk from time to time without worry.

But in some places, and some circumstances, especially when you are traveling you are more vulnerable to an assault. It's more a matter of being prepared than being paranoid.

If you are going to be carrying across state borders you should be aware of what the laws are concerning carrying a weapon for that state. Some states have concealed weapons laws that are more confusing that Utah's liquor laws.

That's just the world we live in. To bad there are those nut-cases out there that make it that way. I'd rather not feel the need to be that careful when taking a road trip.

              Ride safe.

                I agree with the above,also what I have found out over time,also it matters what you are wearing.I try to be safe wear reflective clothing so forth,then people will pull out in front of you,tailgate,in other words act like you aren`t there.I put up with that for part of a day then I got out my black leathers.People act like I`m going to tear their doors off if they get to close.There are fools and idots out there and some that just want to show their ass,be careful out there. {anybody remember Hill Street Blues}

I never thought about that but your right batman. When I used to see people riding motorcycles that were dressed like responsible motorcyclists I always figured they were weak, but a bad assed baby-killing biker you spot immediatley because they strike fear into the hearts of meek cage drivers. Kinda like the only cars you remember after a long drive are cop cars.

Even with a flare gun u could get in trouble, if you use it. Besides, whoever you are up against might have a real gun. So get a nice 9mm or a 357, get it legal and hope you never have to use it.
What use is a bike if you cannot outrun a cage?

                      Pistol permitted

I carry a pistol with me anytime I am on the bike...might seem a little paraniod but it is true. Bikers riding alone are seen as easy marks for local bad guys, specially if you have out of county or out of state tags. I live in Alabama and have heard of people being knocked off their bikes or simply cutoff at intersections and stop lights. You can't lock your doors and call 911 on a bike and the bad guys khow this...also they can mug you very quickly and be on their way. I have had several instances of tailgaters etc...but never had to pull my weapon Thank The Lord....however it pays to be prepared and as always stay aware of your surroundings...crack heads just want the cash from your wallet but will kill to get it....after 3 years in Utah in the early 80's I like the south better...to cold out their bro....

Coming down on the other side of this debate...I've never carried a gun on the bike in my 29 years of riding. Maybe lucky; as I have ridden mostly in the west and mid-west.

And yes, I own several weapons, including 12 and 20 gauge shotguns, Springfield 30-06 and Savage 303 rifles, even a bow and arrows. I'm not anti-gun or anti-weapon

There have been times I've felt uneasy but there was always an answer that didn't involve guns, violence, or bodily injury. As Assimov once said, "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent."

FWIW, I have occasionly carried a few 1-inch bolts in my pocket; a couple over the shoulder and those cars who follow to close tend to back off.....

When it gets to the point where I have to pack a pistol to ride I'll move to a different part of the country or quit riding.

                          Crazy peeps

I have been riding since 1976 and have never had to pull my firearm...however knowing it is available if nec. is nice...I have ridden in California, Utah, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee and all the states between Key West Fl. and Riverside California several times.....Again I thank God I haven't need to pull it....The ability to accelerate away is usually enough to remove yourself from the incident....Or simply pulling over and waiting...However sometimes like this time the peeps that were causing the trouble WERE NOT disuaded by these tried and true manuevers...Thankfully the stopped the harrassment when he turned in with the Harley guys....I hope you never encounter peeps like I have and in that story he told but the world is getting more dangerous all the time....Just pays to be prepared and how you prepare is simply up to you....I go into the worst areas of the inner cities and slums here in the south with my motorcycle ministry brothers to try and help lost peeps....when in a group there is never trouble but alone it is a different thing bro..

I agree, Jerry, "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent." Asimov had the luxury of publishing to a vastly more intelligent population. It seems that now there are more incompetents who are also ignorant and selfish. I can only inagine what thoughts these guys had..."Look at dat, dat sumbich cut me off, right after i ran the stop sign. Let's git him." Now, what do they expect, they are going to hit you on the bike? Beat you up off the bike. These are the thoughts going through their minds?

Maybe next time, pull over, watch when they get out of the car and then pull ahead about 25 feet and stop. Now they either continue on to you, or run back to the car. If they continue walking, pull ahead another 25 or so feet and watch in the rear view. If they give chase pull ahead a little more, then gun it. They will be out of breath by the time they get back to the car and you can get lost. I think you can have a little fun with these guys. Why not, they started it. Will they be pissed off? Yeah, but the truely dumb cannot be soothed, even if you pull into a biker bar loaded with bikes. Fortunately the truely dumb are easily distracted. They will forget.

What a world. Turn the other cheek has become kiss my ass or kick yer ass...

On the other hand, hey Terry, if, God forbid you did get shot, would you be a holey wholly holy rider?

Ride safe, ride well. Ride like you are invisible.
