  • I'm Back!

    Hi All,

Life and a crash a while back have had a profound impact on my riding. Not to mention hitting the '59 mark last week. Gees, I only have one year left! I never though I would get to 60. I don't really think that way. I think there is a huge mistake on my birth certificate, because I think I must be in my 20s somewhere. Ok, maybe late 30s.

To make sure I stay in the groove, I treated my self to an '08 FJR1300. I am so excited, I can't stand it. I have signed all the forms and waiting to go pick it up.

What about Vyger, some may ask? Well, her and I have over 100Kmi together. She has taken me to places I could never have imagined. Both on the road and in the shop. I will keep her around for those sunny dry days when I want to feel my roots of MC riding. And, why I dumped major $$ into a stat of the art sport tourer. I will be selling my SF (to help cover some of the FJR costs). If there comes a time when I stop riding her, I will hoist her into the rafters of my shop and gaze upon her with fond memories.

I am off to check on the lists of rallies this year!

It happened back in August '09. There is a write up on here somewhere. What I did not realize was that I hit my noodle harder than I originally thought. Even with a top quality helmet I received a concussion.

Head injuries are more fickle than many originally thought. I suspect there are a lot of head injury cases walking around that do or did not realize the long term ramification of even minor concussions. It has been a learning experience.

It is a lot about understanding what happened and how to recover. If we damage any other body part, there is a healing period and then physical therapy. With a head injury, they shine a flash light in your eyes and maybe watch you for a few hours, then send you on your way.

As a teacher, I pull stuff out of my head to teach my student that I have known and recalled for years. After the accident I discovered I could no longer do that. Even several days after the accident, I could not remember how to drive myself home. I could look at a map and figure it out, but this was a route I had driven and ridden many times. This kind of stuff went on for 6 months, until I start getting concerned and did some research.

Somewhere around spring of '10, I started doing mental exercises and it is working. It is like the links to the knowledge in my head was disrupted or destroyed. The information is still there, but recall is broken. It seems that the number of times a person gets thumped and age play a part in recovery.

So, if you meet me and I act like I don't know you, that is the reason. If you take a minute and explain where and when we last met, it will come back to me and stay.

Interestingly, motor memory things don't seem to be impacted. Still now how to shift and lean. I stopped riding for a while because I found I got confused a lot on direction and traffic situations.

Although my riding style is much more laid back now, it is still one of my passions. I need to put a sign on my back that says "Lady passenger needed, apply here".

        Ride on,

          Welcome back!

          Hey there DennyZ,

I didn't see this post until tonight. I've been busy with another MOD to the XS11...see the Alternative Alternator Options thread!

I remember hearing about your wreck, but didn't know the extent of your injuries, specifically the concussion and it's severity!? Glad to hear that you're rewiring your "network" from the inside!! I wonder if a 9 volt battery across the tongue might help!?

Folks have come and gone since you were on last, with some interesting going's on in and out of the forums!

Enjoy your FJR, and Vyger when the weather permits, arrive alive!

            Thanks TC,

I am going to keep modifying Vyger. Is too much fun. Still want to make a custom frame to accommodate the FJR rear wheel and the R1 front end.

I'll check out your Alternator mod.
