That's not really a problem; you can hang with the unarmed and defenseless visitors from Yerp caught up in the emergency and help rope in any stray Aussies, Canucks and Kiwis that may have foundered, too.-- Scott

I need some clarification, or else!
"Not gonna lie, I will be part of the problem, and not part of the solution... my emergency preparedness kit includes a 30-06, a .303, 2 12 guages, and a couple .22's...and some rope"
As an unapologetic expatriate Texan, I am totally sympathetic to gun rights, but if you think (and I assume you are being tongue in cheek,) that all you need is a gun to survive, is that to mean that if you have an arsenal you can threaten food and water out of anyone who is better prepaired? My reason for having a firearm would be to protect myself from someone who thought they could take what I have by force!I don't know if I would brag about being part of the problem.
Special EdOld bikers never die, they're just out of sight!
My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"
I've been riding since 1959.

Got a buddy that travels to Canada every year to go hunting, mostly to enter the ballot for a bear. He takes his guns with him so i'll just tag along with him. His are bigger than mine He has a 460 Weatherby that scares the crap outta me and a 44 magnum lever action with a brass butt plate that's left many a bruise on my shoulder.

Pass the poutine please, Kronk, I love the stuff.
Brain, if looters show up when you're out hunting bears just let the bears have the looters and save the large-caliber ammo for the ones the bears don't want!-- Scott

Wow, a thread with divergence
First of all, the New Madrid earthquake happened in 1767. Loss of life and property was minimal because there just were not a lot of people in that neck of the woods. The Mississippi did flow upstream for a while. If you look at a map with a broad enough scope, you'll see a number of crescent shaped lakes to either side of the river. Those lakes are the previous river bed. When the quake struck, it rang the church bells in Boston.
Second of all, everybody seems to feel that when the catastrophe strikes that they will be at home where their survival kits are stored. The true pessimist will not only have a home kit, but there'll be one in the trunk of his car, too.
I didn't see any mention of prescription medications as part of the kits. Nor have I figured out how to do that and keep the stock rotated so they don't expire.
And don't forget pet food, if you have pets.

Med rotation
Ralph
You can begin by refilling your prescription 1-2 weeks before you runout. Take an equal amount of fresh med to swap with your now spare supply. Do it again if you want more - like a months worth. Yes it means seeing your doctor that much sooner.
Most regular pills have a pretty long shelf life (nitroglycerin does not). Now simply wait 6 months to a year and when you refill that day swap the bottle and take the older, still effective med and you have reset the clock.
Antibiotics also are not good candidates for this. I would even discuss with your doctor what you are doing and they will help.
The car kit is a great idea. Smaller is better anyway. Less to keep track of.

Many of the items we rotate out once a year.
We have also considered adding some foil pacages of water.
Attached to the lid we also ave a pad to use it as a stool.
I have seen the buckets at hunting goods stores.
(I use the bucket to sit on while working on the bikes)
I've been working on puting mine together as well, but haven't gotten around to doing much with it. I do have several old bleach bottles filled with water though. If you take an empty bleach bottle (don't rinse it out!) and fill it with water, that water will save for quite a while. I date them with a sharpie, just to be safe.1980 XS850SG - Sold
