  • Riding Maui

My job has me in Maui until early April. I think I need to rent a Harley and go for a ride on a day off. Who here has been there, done that? Does anybody in the group actually live here?

I've rented a bike on the "Big Island", and Kauai. All I can say is RENT A HARLEY FROM A DEALER, NOT A NO NAME PLACE! Kauai I rented from a "motorcycle rental place" who had a road king, BMW, Gold wing, etc. The bike I rented was a P.O.S. and could not get out of it's own way. On HAWAII, I rented from the HD dealer in Kona, and the bike was NICE! I had a 2008 Road Glide with the big engine and six speed, and it just WENT!
I've not been on Maui for many years, so I don't think the roads I was on are the same! I would try the road to Hana, though! If it's clear, go to the top of the Volcano!
Have FUN on the Island, and I DO hope you SCUBA, as the diving is nice! I'll be on the big island again April 13 through the 20.

Hey Marty, are you ok over there? Heard there might've been a big wave headed your way.

          tsunami

I'm fine. It ended up being nothing more than a night of lost sleep. The ocean rose about six feet here, but did very little damage. We were evacuated to the 7th floor. Better safe than sorry!

            Some nice spots to checkout

I have been to Maui a few times, mostly to surf. The nicest, scenic spot is Honolua Bay, west side,,,,,,great surf, better snorkeling, lots of cool scenery, also tons of smokable green stuff from the locals if needed, Maui Wowie, look for the bros with red eyes. The north side tends to be very local and lots of ripoffs, watch your stuff on the beach. Another beach to check out is northwest, unreal hangliding and windsurfing- best in the world go there- Hookipa Beach and if there is a major swell, Jaws, right next to Hookipa. Diveray is right, the volcano is cool, but I find the drive to Hana a pain in the ASxxxx, lots of the same scenery for hours, curvy and monotonous. If you get a chance take a jump flight over to Kaui,,,,,the best of all the islands, scenery, cool locals, beautiful women, unreal motocycle riding, one trip to Hanalei Beach and you will think you are in Heaven, ...........Mahalo,,,,Mike in S.DIego

                Riding on Maui

I rented a Harley on Maui and SWMBO and I rode up into the farm / wine country. Smooth two-lane blacktop, mostly; easy turns, pretty scenery. We had to turn back when the rains came. Scare up a jacket of some kind, 'cause if it rains, it'll hurt.

Another great place to ride is to Mama's Fish House. Spectacular Food!!!

I ended up with just a half day off, so I rented a Harley and rode it around West Maui. It was a very pretty ride. The sidestand spring broke, and I had to tie it up with a piece of barbed wire, just to complete the experience.

No matter the bike, it's the same wind in the face. It satisfied my urge. I had a great afternoon.

                        I second Diver Ray's advice...

Many years ago (1985 to be exact) my buddy and I went on a dive trip to Fiji (buy me a beer sometime cuz the tale is worth it) but we rented a Kawasaki 125 near the end of trip since we ran low on cash - rented from a junkyard for $10 /day with $50 (US) deposit. Riding 2-up I had a cab cut me off and stop. Brakes tried hard but couldn't do it so I kinda laid it sideways so wheels would hit first, then we highsided into it - my helmet crashing into A-pillar and windshield at maybe 5-10mph? Did $600 in damage to taxi. Broke plastic front fender on bike and twisted bars a bit. Lost $50 deposit Limped home with badly bruised knee. Cops called to scene said "They are American. They pay or they don't pay - whatever they want to do." Protecting Fiji tourism.
There was a military coup a couple years later, never went back.

I didn't get back on a motorcycle for a few years.

Diving was best in the world I've seen.

                        John

(Yes we paid - had to wire $ from Dad, but taxi driver got his cab fixed)

Go ahead, click on the bikes - you know you want to...the electrons are ready.

I ended up renting from one of those independents, expecting the worst. It was the best choice for me under the circumstances. The bike had good tires and brakes, and ran fine. It had an inop fuel gauge, nuetral light, and was obnoxiously loud. Other than the broken sidestand spring, it was no trouble.

My first choice would have been the dealer, but that just wasn't going to happen. I had a great ride on Maui with my bride.

I just landed at ATL, so I'll try to put up some photos when I get caught up.
