Antique plates are another issue. Here in Georgia, I can have them for the asking, if the vehicle is at least 25 years old. They have a picture of an antique motorcycle or car. They don't mean anything. I still pay the same tax and tag fee every year.

Antique vehicle insurance is another matter, independent of the plate, at least where the State of Georgia is concerned. The state only requires me to carry liability insurance for anything driven on a public road.

California has something similar for classic vehicles. You can get plates just like what would have been issued to the vehicle when it was new. Kind of a moot point for mine, it still has the original plates issued when it was new, so I already have them, and didn't have to pay the extra the state likes to charge.

The only problem I have had, is sometimes the DMV systems insist my plate number is wrong, because it doesn't have the right number of digits on it as they increased the number of characters on MC plates like sometime in the mid to late 80's.

I've had 17 consecutive years' minimum legal coverage with Progressive, for my XS11. Last few years, they've reduced the premium a bit each year, I guess for longevity years covered, and no "incidents". Last two years down to $75 per year. Yesterday, I get my annual premium renewal, and it's $95!! WTF!

That's because the insurance companies take your premium money and invest it in the stock market. If the stock market does well, that helps reduce the premiums they need to pay claims. The market took a dump, so less money from there; you get to make up the difference...

My insurance through Progressive was $75 for last year and it stayed the same this year... Mater of fact, they increased my coverage at no cost, up to 100/50, because I have my home owners insurance with them too. You should call them and ask them if they can do something about it...

I too have Progressive

For Great Ranger and The Rising Sun, but am thinking of choosing a separate company for the next bike I buy for my son to ride since I want him on the policy but not on my other bike's policies..

Anybody do this type setup? He is not going to get to ride the 1100 for some time (3-4 years).

i have a clean record and i would look at$ 95 per year as if i had won the lottery!!up here a new driver on an xs1100 could expect to pay maybe $2000 per year or more ,, i pay much less but not anywhere near $95 per year ,,just my 2 cents ,,ride safe slow mo!

i pay $53.00 a year thru markel. i have renewal, safe driver and safety course discount. i live in pa.

I've been with Progressive for many years, a couple of years ago I oopsed and let the insurance lapse, and my rates went back up to $95.00. This year the renewal fee is $75.00, again just basic liability, no comp/coll! Living in Va., using regular plates because the antique ones are black/ugly, and part of their requirement of use is that there are mileage limits, and time on the road...how they might enforce that I don't know, but I've seen many antique cars running the road EVERY DAY!

I'm married, 53 y/o, that can also contribute to reduced costs vs. being much younger and single!

Well, I'm going to take my chances with coverage from an insurer that does the "vintage coverage". I've had the "antique" tag on my machine for several years. What companies have the "antique-vintage-liability" coverage" ?
