Y'know, my 650 twin I had was like that. No matter what, every spring the bike would start running crummy within a week after the 'winter break' was over and I had to pull the carbs and blow them out. Never found anything (and in those days I had good eyes and would have seen any gunk), but after I'd done it I was good to go....

      Steve,
Even Biker phil commented about how finicky my carbs are. He's got two '79's and said he hasn't had to clean them in years!! Go figure, the price of new and improved!!

Not sure about this, but the newer carbs could somehow be emission restricted and have some smaller passages than the early "muscle" type. That crappy cheap fuel don't help either.

Could be, I wonder if that passage between the pilot jet and the emulsion tube/main jet circuit is a contributing factor as well. Since it's forced to take the fuel from that passage since it's 'plugged' with that rubber stopper.
Yeah, that was my last visit to that CITGO station.
BTW - Cutting off the snorkel sure makes carb removal/installation a nearly painless procedure. Thanks

well i can tell you the carbs the gentlemen overseas received are not mine.. i do not glass bead my carbs.. the throttle shafts will be gritty and the slides will stick,, it is almost impossible to get all of that powdered glass out of the carbs completely, it embeds itself. i do not get into to bidding wars on carbs so it was not me that scored those carbs on 1/06

Hey Wicked, not to be a jerk or nothing, but I always find those ads that say "just bolt on, set idle and ride" to be ....well.....misleading. Any set of carbs no matter how well set up will need to have the mixture adjusted and the synch set to match the engine cylinders they are feeding.

Not trying to pick on you, I just hate when the uninformed inexperienced people buy stuff based upon someone who they believe knows their stuff saying it is plug and play, and then its not.

I sort of agree and sort of disagree.

The idle mixture, yes. But, I always ask for current bike setup before shipping so that the mixture will be ballpark enough that it will be good enough to get it started and ride it. But, it definitely needs to be fine tuned on-bike.

The sync part is a little different. A really good bench sync will run and idle beautifully if the rest of engine is operating as it should be ie, good compression and proper valve clearances. Of course, you still can't beat a dynamic sync, but you should definitely be able to bolt them on and ride with only marginal room for improvement with some fine tuning. That is the experience I have had with on bike testing the carbs I have done over the years.

Other results may vary. Please do not take carbs internally. Some riders may experience a sensation know as 'heavy wrist syndrome' that may result in traveling at high rates of speed, poor fuel mileage, and the desire to blow the doors off of unsuspecting, chrome laden V-twins motorcycles. If you experience thoughts of open roads and winding corners, please consult your favorite XS related website. In rare cases, some patients reported throwing piles of money at their XS and strange love for the smell of unburnt fuel. Ride as directed and seek help if you experience any of these symptoms.
